I'm looking at some re-gearing options. One thing I'm noticing is that ring and pinion sets for JK and TJ Jeeps do not cross reference as fitting Intermediate CJs (or International Scouts for that matter, which do cross reference with 72-75 Jeeps). Seems to me a Dana 44 is a Dana 44. Is the pinion shaft shorter, the ring wider on later models? I know there are differences in spline counts on carrier/axles and different diameters for bearings. But it seems like this shouldn't matter for the ring a pinion.

    Any experts?

    According to "Fourwheeler" magazine:

A traditional Dana 44 axle uses an 8.5-inch ring gear. However, JK Wrangler rear axles use an 8.8-inch ring gear with a Dana 60-sized pinion shaft. The JK axle is still referred to as a Dana 44, but neither the differential nor the ring-and-pinion are compatible with older Dana 44s.

But, the good thing is, a gear from a jk would fit all dana 44 prior de 1986.

There a kit on internet that can be buy to fit those gear.

    Jantz Engineering: Jana 54

(Jana is Carl jantz that some may have seen on alaska offroad warrior)

But i would go that way only if you're looking for a bulletproof dana 44.

Just beware of the reverse gear for dana 44, those are intend to use with high pignon dana 44 axle.
