I did a rebuild on one of these 6 months ago and this one all went together well until I looked at it when I was done.

The sliding gear is in backwards with the shift collar on the wrong side. That's the sort of thing I would do.

Sliding gear is fine it's the high side that's backwards with the splines away from the sliding gear.

    Correct
It’s apart and back together. Got some other parts cleaned and ready to put back together.

Haven’t gotten into the transmission yet.

Whoops, correct. For some reason I was thinking the shift collar faced the middle of the transfercase. But yep, the small gear is backwards so it doesn't line up and the splines are on the wrong side for the sliding gear to engage it.

I used EvapoRust and let em sit for s couple days in order to dissolve the rust. Then I washed and dried them real good with a heat gun to get all the moisture out of the hinges. Then Sprayed them with Metal Ready (made by POR-15) which etches them and leaves a zinc phosphate coating. Basically just reenergizing the zinc in the areas of the galvanized (zinc) coating that had been compromised by rust over the decades.

If you wanted to get real crazy, You could spray them with an actual cold galvanizing coating. Home depot sells em in spray cans and It turns em flat grey like a naval military flat paint. I'm more into the stock look so I chose not to.

Cool there is a spray on product without resorting to plating.

I started repairing the tailgate opening and floor of the ‘53 Willys wagon!

The new parts come with no instructions, so I’m dependent upon those who’ve gone before. There are several (many?) over on the Old Willys Forum that have done it…

    Progress
I removed the driver side fender, and if you look at the bottom, the tub now needs some patching.

The wiring on the Pass fender is complete. I was going to paint the fenders before installation, but I needed to know exactly how to route the wires, so I may mask and paint in place.

Now that the fender is removed I can access the control module. It is a MSD w/advance control. As you can see the plastic connectors disintegrated due to heat. I may just clean up the pins and mating plug and try to plug them back together and try to seal things, and make it so they can't come apart. Or cut the plugs off and put on new ones, ...... we'll see.

And Last, but not Least, this is under the front cross member on the Intermediate frame. I 3D printed a junction box. This junction is for the Fog Lights, Left and Right turn signals, (which use the fog lights) Driving lights, and the 6" Baja lights. The box that was here was smashed, and crushed the two 50Amp contactors inside. Those were for supplying power to the KC sealed beam Dayliters. Which have been replaced with LED's

And Yes I noticed the frame rot that needs addressed :banghead:

Going to mount dad's cb on the back, searching for a quick release mount. It came with half, the other half went with the 77 GMC High Sierra camper special

Took this speedo I bought from a member here

    upload_2023-4-2_9-40-11.jpeg

And an old one I had laying around

    upload_2023-4-2_9-45-36.jpeg

Replaced the fuel gauge from the one I bought with the Stewart Warner one out of my old one

    upload_2023-4-2_9-48-7.jpeg

Cleaned things up and now I have a spare speedo. Not perfect, but good enough
