    Pulling the 231 again….

    Here’s a clue…

the oil pump prime looked good but the engine shreaked when I tried to run the break-in and zero oil pressure.

I think I got a bearing wrong/spun. Only about 2 minutes on the run total.

We’re approaching mud season, so I put the meats back on the Worker B this morning.

It’s out. Now to figure out what’s wrong.

The #5 rod has zero play on the crank. All the others I can move slightly by hand. I removed the cap and the bearing is in there correctly. Checked a couple. What do you think?

Why does that rod look cocked on the crank? Sure the piston pins were done correctly?

Seems I no end play on the crank. How much typical should we have? Enough to see/feel?

.004-.008. Your thrust bearing/ faces need to be in good shape. You never ran this engine? There could be a host of issues unfortunately.

Maybe We’ve solved a couple issues. The tolerance on the bearing and rod caps seems pretty loose. We were able to wedge the crank one way and the caps the opposite way then tighten. Got a little wiggle on both the #5 rod and crank. The engine definitely turns over smoother. Going to put assembly lube on everything and torque it all again. Opening up the oil pump next to see if that is where the gold dust is coming from.

The main caps can't be mixed up or installed incorrectly or there will be issues; the same goes for the connecting rods. Since metal went through the engine I highly recommend taking it back down to the bare block and doing it right.

If you plan on taking the Jeep on long distance trips, it'd pay to have a fresh build to ward off another Colorado Epic engine disaster.

The caps are numbered so I’m sure I have them right. I sent the piston rods to the shop in order, put them back th order they returned them. Did the shop mix them up? Not unlikely I think.

Check the rod orientation of each individual connecting rod and make sure you put them in right. That engine shouldn't be hard to turn over.

You shouldn't be feeling any wiggle. Plastigage all the bearings to see where you stand.
