We drained the mocha latte out of the gearboxes on the new 55.
Currently rinsing it out and will run it to see how it goes.

Also bought some gaskets, seats, shift knobs (even a shift tower) and other support gear to get in and under this tractor.

I took the spare tire carrier off because the toy hauler is only 12' and I was a couple inches long. It will ride in the truck and I'll reinstall in CO

worked on the trailer today, got it reloaded after putting the water tank on underneath. Then I decided to put on the exterior battery connections.

When I went to wire the inside, I thought I had 4 2awg connectors, but could only find 2. So I had to improvise. I found some 1/2 copper pipe, cut off 2 ", flattened half, drilled a 3/8 hole, soldered the cable on and, tada!!!

I tried running my jeep with the gas cap off, no better.
I put the fuel pickup hose into a jerry can, to bypass the pickup inside the tank, no better. Still runs out of gas:banghead::steamed:
So, I decided to do something more fun and put a few rounds through my AR.

Today I tore down the D-44 flanged offset rear diff for a rebuild. Nothing looks abused and P O has had it apart and installed a Power Lok unit. Will change out the gear ratio to 5.38's, install fresh bearings and seals, and put a new clutch pak in the P/L. Will put 11" brakes on it as well. Should be a good upgrade for the Willys 2A

I was looking around the nets trying to find the correct seals for my Rover when I stumbled across something I knew would be perfect for a CJ.

Being British and metric it took a little work. The bolt was a spare M12 from my TJs front unit bearing

Nothing of big interest except that I must protect cars because of swallow nests, this year they are very active and more families are in the barns. Nid swallows.jpeg

Last week I replaced the rear passenger side axle on my AMC20-equipped '76 jeep. It's been working fine on several rides. However, I was taking my grandkids out for a spin when at the end of the ride, whenever I'd apply the brakes, there was a horrible screeching sound from that same rear wheel. The next morning I jacked up the rear end, removed the wheel and the drum to see what I could see. As soon as the drum came off, I saw one of the springs from one of the shoe hold-downs was loose in the bottom of the drum. Apparently, the shoe hold-down pin broke. It was bent when I installed it and my lizard brain told me I should replace it, but I didn't have a spare.

I drove to the nearest FLAPS in Kellogg, ID, about 12 miles away. They had spare pins in stock for a whopping 52 cents each. I bought a few, headed home, and reinstalled the loose shoe.

My son and his family piled in the jeep and we headed up into the mountains to pick huckleberries. As we were climbing a steep hill, the engine acted like it was starving for gas and conked out. This is the second time this has happened. In both cases, the starvation has occurred after the engine has become hot after a long climb. The first time, I let the engine cool off a bit and it started right up and I turned around and went home. This time I was prepared for the same thing. My wife was following us in the truck and in the back of the truck I had a tow bar.

While the jeep was cooling off, we looked for huckleberries in our usual spot. This spot has always been reliable for ripe huckleberries around 4th of July, but this year there was absolutely nothing.

The power lines in this photo are coming over Cooper Pass from the the Thompson Falls Dam on the Clark Fork River in Montana. The lines power the mines (or at least the few remaining mines) in the Silver Valley.

When the jeep cooled off a bit, it started right up and we drove home. A while ago I replaced the mechanical fuel pump with a cheap Amazon electric pump. I have a suspicion the pump stops working when it gets very hot where I have it mounted in the engine compartment. I decided to switch back to the mechanical pump. Here's a photo of switching back when both pumps are installed.

Since switching back, I've driven the jeep back and beyond the place where it previously conked out. I'm not convinced the problem is solved, but the jeep hasn't quit on me on a bunch of rides since the switch.

I know this looks a bit dorky, but it is functional. I have a 48" hi lift jack that is usually in the garage or the shed or laying in the back of the 4runner . I want to have it with the jeep during the Colorado trip. I put the base and the head in the under seat tool box, the handle in my dry storage box. But main bar wouldn't fit in the back very well.

I flipped the two hood hinge bolts so their threads stick up, put a coupling nut on top, then a fender washer, the jack bar, then these 5/16-18 hand knobs to hold it all in place.

I know they sell brackets at quadratech, etc that do this same job, but those stick up too high to lay windshield down. With this setup I just remove the jack bar and there is room to lay the windshield down.

Went to start the '71 for a drive last night and the starter made horrible noises and just spun. Took the Xterra on the drive instead since the '69 Jeep is all torn apart.

Looked at it this morning and the short starter bolt is missing and the long one is halfway out. No wonder it won't start.

Stole a bolt from the parts motor and it's much happier now.

Luxury - replaced the fuel sending unit and wire - gas gauge now works! This was the old wire, seemed original

Found it!:bananatool: 1st in line is a clear plastic filter just before the mech fuel pump. Was empty. I thought the gas just wasn't getting up there. When i opened the line at the filter, the pump filled a jar just like it should. Took the line apart at the carb, and the pump filled the jar (coffee can) just like it should. The darn inlet filter on the Q jet was stopped up. I guess its simple hydraulics, if gas can't move through the second filter, then it stops it from getting to the 1st filter.

About 30 years ago my brother owned a 53 cj3b. It would randomly shut off from sudden fuel starvation. The carb, fuel filter, and fuel pump glass would be completely empty. Wait about 15 seconds and crank the starter a bit and she would fire right back up and run perfect 5 minutes or sometimes 5 days before a repeat. Every time just wait a few seconds and crank her up and go. Went nuts trying to figure the cause, new fuel pump no help, new filters no help, removed and cleaned all fuel lines, no help, even tried changing the carb, nothing helped. Still the problem persisted.:study: We did notice the problem usually but not always occurred when fuel level was down to 1/4 tank of fuel or less. The 3b had the under seat tank with the fuel pickup on the bottom of the tank. Looked in the tank with a flashlight and all was clean as could be. While looking in the tank suddenly we see a small piece of brown paper about 3x4 inches floating suspended in the gasoline along the floor of the tank. What was happening was the paper would randomly pass the fuel pickup and be sucked down by the fuel pump vacuum which would seal off the fuel supply. When the engine would finally stop from the fuel starvation the fuel pump vacuum would cease and the piece of paper would simply float away until it randomly passed by again.

Had a similar problem once , trying to bleed the clutch cylinder , on my ' 68 CJ5. We could not get it to bleed at all , until I removed & drained the reservoir.
The paper cap from the Prestone bottle had fell in & was covering the outlet every time we put pressure to it . Removed that & it bled perfectly ?

Finally got a day cool enough to paint again. I got the runs sanded out and fogged the rest of the hood, but it's been too hot. So I tore the HVLP gun apart that I got new 2 wks ago. The center pin was completely covered in rust. I sent my son to Harbor Freight to buy another new HVLP gun. Cleaned it and got it adjusted and ready to paint. My first pass looked totally orange peeled..... :banghead:I added more thinner the rest turned out just a bad, except I now have another small run. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Soooooo I dug out my old siphon feed paint guns, only one was usable, luckily it was the one I used to paint my son's Jeep 10 yrs ago. Mixed up another patch of paint, It went on like glass......(y) albeit glass over orange peel. So I do still know how to paint, just not with HVLP.

I'll wet sand again tomorrow, If I don't sand thru the color I'll try my hand at clear. :coffee:

Found the oil leak :D few hundred miles of fairly leak free driving...then all the sudden started getting a puddle of oil...1 minute quarter size, 5 minutes small pancake sized, overnight a dinner plate.
didn't leak much when cold, and it all seemed to be coming from around the drain plug.
    20200712_163417.jpg
Figured I had a bad crush washer so I dropped the oil to find this
    20200712_163630.jpg
pretty bad but still should have sealed it up...new crush washer and it was still doing the same so I dropped the pan to find...
    20200714_192537.jpg
broken spot weld...the bash plate was kinda banged up when I got the jeep...I figure my bending it back to kinda straight stressed the weld and then heat cycles finally finished it off.
