All this talk of winches reminds me of a sidewinder winch I passed up a few years ago, it's was a vintage one, one I wish I bought now because I want to build my jeep to be period correct to the 60's-70's. I think it was only $75 too... Still kicking myself. Who made them? I remember it looked like a big square and was relatively flat. And does anyone know what kind of pulling power they had? I though they were cool because they were unique, even if they didn't function as well as modern barrel type winches.

That was it, I wish I could find one to put on my jeep.. I should have bought that one... I was told it wouldn't fit, but I know I could make it work.

It may have been $175, I don't remember exactly, it was also 2 hours away. I know it was under $250... This was years ago when I was in highschool and didn't have much money.

The cost for free later outweighed any of it in spades...

I'm going to go out on a limb (pun intended) & say they were made by Hickey Enterprises.

No real reason, just a total guess on my part

Yep Hickey and later a similar one by advance adapters then sold off due to low volume. Supposedly they were originally 8-9k iirc and the advance one was 10k. Comments by AA elude to current license/ tooling in the wind.

IIRC they were prone to clogging in muddy environments. Good luck!

These were Made by Hickey.. Out of business. I believe they predated WARN. I came across an old Hickey winch, not a side winder but a worm drive.. Ran, but when I pulled it down to rebuild it the bull gear was ate up.. Never did find a replacement..

They were made by Hickey. Had one in the 70's under the front of 3/4T Dodge. They were rated at 6,000 but equivalent to an 8,000 due to the diameter of the spool. Problems were:
    1. easily packed with mud
    2. next to impossible to spool the cable properly causing the cable to continually bind
    3. used a non water proof starter motor that frequently needed to cleaning and rebuilding

Cool factor was it fit between the frame rails and tucked behind the front bumper
Saw one at Puyallup swap meet last year. $100. Offered him $50 for garage art factor. Turned me down.

Hickey also made performance equipment for the early Jeeps 134L high compression heads manifolds that mounted dual carbs and special dual wheel adapters. Highly sought after goodies
