I'm tired and don't have any.

I've got my t14/D18/overdrive sitting on the bench looking to be seperated after many years of acting together as a (hopefully) well oiled team. Anyhow, I got the overdrive off, removed the little snap ring and funky little washer, but I can't get the weird nut holding the hub on to budge. Hit it with a 1/2 impact wrench - no love. Problem is I can't keep the transmission from spinning when I try to get it with a breaker bar.

Thanks in advance for any brilliant or even average insights.

ran into this problem when taking apart the flattie trans/transfer/pto combo for the twin sticks: i used a pry bar in the output ujoint flange to block the spinning. don't remember if trans was in gear, but transfer was in 4low.

I dropped the front drive shaft and slid bar into the ubolts and let the bar contact something (ground/frame) to remove and install nut.

Once the overdrive is out the trans and x-fer are not connected in a driveline sense - in other words they spin freely of each other. Holding the outputs of the x-fer will not affect the trans spinning.

it wasn't my idea if it breaks some splines... but how about a pipe wrench on the input shaft??

    Your right!
I was speaking of the main shaft gear nut in the xfer case.

Before I put a wrench on the input shaft, I'd take the top off the transmission and put it in two gears at once. That will freeze the transmission. I'd think the gears are way stronger than whatever torque you can apply to the main shaft nut.

It looks like I'm gonna hafta really push on this thing to get it off, just tried a little but the wife caught me when we're supposed to be getting ready to go to a party.

I'll hit it tommorrow with some more leverage. Thanks to Tim & all for the input.

    Another silly idea:
The round iron head of a hammer is a similar diameter as a ujoint. Remove the d.s. and slide the hammer into one ubolt. Orient the hammer so that the handle binds against the tranny when you apply counter-clockwise torque to the nut. Tighten the ubolt against the hammer and wrench away.

It worked for me when I couldn't get a pinion nut off--the pinion just kept spinning until this trick. Good luck!
    -Alan
    P.S. how was the party?

Party was great. Nut is still on. Now the whole thing is sliding around the garage as I try to get the thing off. No time to deal with today tho. I'll get it.

I'm probably missing something but wouldn't this be the place to use an impact wrench? If ya don't have one this may be the project where you can justify getting one!
