Working with a friend on his 2004 TJ with the 4.0 6cyl. Doing some maintenance including replacing coolant, hoses etc. Have a question about the thermostat: We have heard some suggestions (or maybe internet forum mis-information) that we should drill a hole in outer flat flange in our new replacement Stant thermostat (which currently does not have one). Have not removed the current (and original we think) thermostat to see whether it has a hole or not. Wondering if we really need to do this or what is the idea behind doing it.

    thanks all

I'm not sure why you would. Unless you have bypassed the heater core and didn't loop the hoses.

I've done many TJ thermostats, and have tried drilling a small hole in them. The only thing it accomplishes is making it take longer to warm up in cold weather. The TJ cooling system is not prone to air pockets therefore does not benefit from drilling a hole in the thermostat.
