I'm looking at buying a Dana 44 powerlock for my 5.38 geared M38A1. I want to make sure it's right for my rig. It's a 19 spline, which is ok for me. The F-head will never leave the jeep long as I have it. I'll either go with 19 spline tapered axles or go with a full floater and have axles made up.

Numbers on the case indicate a build date of 1-28-63 B

    Other number is 23209X

There are quite a few #s on the portion the ring gear bolts to: X AAAAA 44 STD C30761 But I think those are all cast-in numbers

Std indicates a 4 series case which on a 44 fits 3.92-1 down to 5.38-1.
If it was cast/stamped auto it would be a 3 series which on a 44 fits 3.73-1 up to 2.54-1.
Pay close attention to the condition of the splines on the side gears. Jeep Powerlocks with 19 spline side gears were 2 piece side gears and common for the splines to get worn out. They would wear out the axle splines as well.
A common upgrade if you can find them is to use Jaguar side gears and clutch rings as the side gears were one piece and didn't suffer from this issue. Stronger too.

Thanks Nick. I have the Powerlock at the house and just took another look at it:

    1. 2 piece spline gears (hadn't noticed before)
    2. splines on side gears look very good; edges look factory clean and defined, no rolling or mashing of edges, etc
    3. looking thru the openings in the case, all the side/spider gears look very good- no chips or excessive wear
    4. little too much gunk in there to suit me so I'll disassemble it and clean it up

Jaguar parts, huh? How do you find them? Ebay? Are you talking used or a new kit? I may not need them if the parts there are still serviceable; the jeep will retain the Fhead.
