I am getting close to being able to install the gas tank. I think I am just going to buy a replacement steel one. I see 3 choices:

    Crown

    Spectra

    Omix

Is one any better than another?

    Is there a cheaper solution?

I'd go with Spectra only because of the three it's for sure made on this continent. I've done a couple of the other brands and had problems with the holes for the mounts being off, at least with that style which are the same as 72/73 Commando. I believe I had to re-drill the two holes for the side brackets and bend the tab on the rear. The one currently in my 73 gave me no problem at all, it's a Spectra, of course that was something like 25 years ago but I'd assume the quality is still the same.

Spend the extra dollars and get a Poly MTS tank. With the ethanol fuel we have now more, steel gas tanks are showing up with rust from the water ethanol pulls into the tank. If you plan to keep your Jeep long term, get a poly tank. I walking the talk and changing mine out right now. Already purchased the tank & pulled the old steel tank today. Got my tank online from JustTanks.com. The tank was drop shipped form MTS. Good Luck!

I'm going to poly in the old truck, if I ever get to working on it. I agree with rocmoc.

I cannot say about steel or poly, hte fact is water in the tank is a problem.

My problem was that there are many models with various positioning for the pipes, so it is good to have a supplier who accepts to change it is not adapted.

The sender unit must be adapted too. And adapted to the dash gauge.

Maybe better to keep and reinstall your sender unit, mine still doesn't work and it is not so easy.
