Brake Drum Issue

    I just bought new drums front and back and neither are fitting right. The front is a Dana 27 the new drum does not fit over the shoes. I tried a set of shoes from KaiserWillys and a set from O'reilys. It seems they aren't centered as it fits over the bottom but not the top of the pad even with the star cranked down all the way.

    The rear is a different issue all together. The drum fits over the drum but it does not sit flush on the axle hub. The dust cover/wheel brake housing seems deeper than the front and the drum hits it. Any advice from the experts? Thanks guys, anything will help.

    Front brake shoes might need to be arched. However, no one does that anymore.


    IIRC some grind the excess away.

    Take a close look and make sure the ends of the shoes are tight against the anchor stud on top. If not something is installed incorrectly or holding the shoes apart.

    so should i just cut my losses and do a disc brake conversion? Any ideas on the back? Are the front and rear break drums the same?

    Well if you're in the business of dumping money as fast as possible, sure.

    If not, just take sometime to double check like nickmil suggested.


    The brake drums should be the same size, as far as surface area goes. But I can't comment on interchangeability.

    Have you compressed the wheel cylinder pistons in far enough?

    I'm guessing the backing plates on the rear are not original.


    "Did you roll the adjusters back in?" His original post said the front star wheels are in all the way. It would seem something may be out of place or not seated correctly in the front assembly.

    If you still have the old drums you could see if they fit. It might narrow down the troubleshooting.

    I had my friend who is pretty familiar with drums look over it. He couldn't figure anything wrong I'll redo the front again and post results.

    The backing plate on the rear seems aftermarket. I have an extra 44 so I'll just swap the backing plates out.

    Make sure the anchor block is not up-side down. If wrong it will hold the shoes out too far at the top.

    Not really. I'm going to take a picture of the block but I never took it off. Just took the hubs off so I'll take another swing at it this evening. It's got to be something simple. I'm swapping the rear axle so not concerned with the rears at this time.

    In your first picture, it looks like your wheel cylinder might be pushing out a little too far....maybe loosen your bleeder & release pressure? nevermind...I looked too quick & see that your lines aren't even connected.
    How bout a pic or two without the drum & hub...something doesn't look right about your shoes.

    Pictures of the set up. It's extremely close. Now I'm thinking this break kit isn't right. The purple springs are contacting the wheel cylinder. I'm still a newbie to this if you didn't already know...
