hahaha okay don't laugh but how do I quiet the jeep with buick v6?

I got a really bad exhaust leak too, and not sure if my exhaust will separate in pieces that can go back together.

I don't care that the jeep is loud or I see smoke come out of floor boards from exhaust.. would this help a lot putting in a gasket?

    Any other ideas?

The mechanic looking at my transmission says he can't pinpoint any noises because its too loud.

I got the jeep for a few days before I bring it back to him to take care of some issues on it.

So, we're talking exhaust noise? The factory exhaust is pretty quiet...I can recall sneaking up on deer in dad's Jeep.
Step 1 would be to repair any exhaust leaks.
Do you have headers? Aftermarket mufflers? Side exit pipes?
All those will make it louder.

iron exhaust manifolds, and non stock muffler (brand no clue) and exits at passenger rear.

I will go down to FLAPS and pick up a gasket in a little bit.

I didnt know the exhaust was supposed to be quiet..

I don't like carpet, I know that works but it tends to lead to rust.

    Life is full of trade-offs.

Use carpet and padding, and pull it up occasionally to check for dampness. Or use closed-cell foam for padding, like the Harbor Freight floor pads. You can address the issues, if you want quiet.

The fan can make a lot of noise too, as can the tires.

hmm this is for a mechanical fan?

i'm trying to make it quieter for the mechanic because he can't pinpoint the drive train noise,

its helping me think of other things that I need to address.

hmm that harbor freight stuff sounds like a fantastic idea though for long trips :)

Check your body mounts, if any of the body is in contact with any part of the drive train, it will "telegraph" to the body and sound worse than it is.

I had the exhaust separated where the pipes meet when I bought mine.

Sounded like it had a built 350.

Had the power of a 4 cylinder too. mehh

i dont think there are any gaskets between the manifolds an pipes. just a flanged pipe. usually they rust out there and have a crappy seal. but who knows. look for the noise and fix it

there is a lot of different noises,

I picked up two gaskets and will change them out this weekend, no time today or tomorrow.

I will check to see if anything is touching drivetrain and body mounts.

Earplugs.........seriously, have your mechanic put in some cone shaped earplugs. They will block out the white noise and he should be able to still hear enough to pinpoint any out of the ordinary sounds.

I've got a single exhaust with a Flow Master muffler and it's quiet. It has the tail pipe exiting out the right rear corner.

I'm trying to refrain from telling mechanic what to do... Might translate into larger bill. I might mention it when I bring it back.

With no top and doors I would be interested to see how much harbor freight floor mats, or actual sound deadening does.

Hmm, I'm really interested to see if fixing this exhaust leak will help, I got single exhaust pipe too. My chevy truck with dual exhaust had its mufflers rusted out and I think the jeep is louder.

For floor mats I use a 3 x 5 I think welcome door mat from most any hardware store. has a rubber back. cut 3' x 3' for the back area and use the rest for the front two mats

A mechanic's stethoscope might be the answer for your transmission guy.

Thought I would tell you guys my heat riser the bushing is missing along with the thermostat coil thingy, and the gasket is bad on the passenger side. I couldn't get drives side off, but it doesn't leak.

which this might explain the annoying tick noise and I also started the jeep up with no muffler its not much louder.. I'm thinking this is issue hopefully I will know for sure by the end of the day.

Also one of my tires is severely out of balance or something I flipped it to the front and can track down the noise coming from the tire too.

That could make some noise ... Generally replacement heat risers are hard to find.

You don't need the flap really. One option is to cut out the flap and shaft and take it to a welding shop and have the holes for the shaft welded up.

Or your local muffler shop can probably modify the exhaust pipe to mate directly to the flange, and eliminate the heat riser entirely.

I found a heat riser on ebay that is new that should fit for 25$, im on the fence about it..

in mean time I put a steel spacer and tapped it in and will wire the flap open. also, got a back up bolt just in case (I prefer not to do this)

I didn't think about having a shop weld it closed
