D18 Rebuild Tool Available

    Hey Guys -

    Yesterday I dropped off the mainshaft and front output shaft from my D18 rebuild project at a local machine shop to have the bronze bushing in the end of the mainshaft replaced. This is the bushing that the inboard end of the front output shaft rides in.

    I had no idea how to get the old one out...sounds like the trick was to use a drill and carefully eat away at the bushing until it was thin enough to chip out with a screwdriver.

    To press in the new bushing the guy made the tool pictured below - the end slips into the bushing, the next shoulder is the inner diameter of the mainshaft end and pushes the bushing in. The next shoulder sets the depth.

    We might use this on Mike Oakes case this weekend (his bushing was in better shape but not nearly as tight as with a new one), after that I can ship it off to anyone who might need it.

    Yep somewhere in the garage is a complete set of homemade (read machine shop) tools to disassemble and rebuid a spicer 18 case and a t14 trans. All made about 7-8 years ago out of aluminum. Heck cleaning out the garage a few weeks ago I found the spindle nut socket I made about 10 years ago, forgot I had it, have since replaced it with a boughten one, but mine is built better!:D Heck I even made a little tool to fit a ratchet to tighten the little cross nut on the bell crank when you rebuild it.

    That's what I had to do years ago also. Be aware that sometimes the inner diameter of the bushing does not allow enough clearance for the pilot of the front output shaft once the bushing is pressed in. You may have to have the bushing honed/machined out once to fit. I ran into this a couple of times. Just double check it before doing the final assembly on the transfer case so you don't run into any surprises. Nickmil.

    4wd sells a nifty little pilot bushing puller that also happens to pull the d18 output shaft bushing very easily.
    To ream the d18 bushing you will likely need a 19/32 - 21/32 adjustable reamer.
    I drove my replacement bushing in with an alum. dowel, though not as fancy as the above one, reamed it for a tight fit and dabbed on a little moly assembly lube .

    OK - we used this to replace the bushing in Mike's case. We got the bushing out by using a Dremel and sanding the bushing thin enough to chip out with a screwdriver.

    Sparky or Bob - who gets it next?

    To speak for Sparky, I am ready to rebuild as soon as he and I can get together. I already have one tranny/tc combo on the floor, and can pull the other whenever.


    Bob, you are up first and it is up to you. Sparky and I are patient folk. We can work on a tranny for now and tackle the TC when you are done.

    Resurrecting this thread to see if anyone with the know how to make this bushing install tool wants to make one to sell me? I don't have access to a lathe or machining equipment.
