I bought this overdrive and want to go through it, but can't seem to separate it. What am I missing? It won't budge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.[IMG][/IMG]

You should be able to just pull the entire barrel gear assembly out of the aluminum housing. It might be a little tight, but it should just come apart with a little wiggling. At worst you might have to put the housing in a vise and use a slide-hammer to pull the barrel assembly out. Unless there is something screwed up it shouldn't take too much to separate them.

Did you take the Snap Ring out of it?

There shouldn't be a snap ring other than the special one for attaching the barrel gear to the tranny output shaft. Typically, to remove an OD from the vehicle, you would remove the through-bolts that hold the housing to the back of the t-case, then pull off the housing. Then you would remove the special snap ring and keeper and unscrew the threaded collar that holds the barrel gear to the tranny shaft. I don't believe there is anything that would keep you from just pulling the barrel gear assembly out of the housing as shown in the picture. Do not remove the smaller cap that is part of the housing. That's a whole 'nother can of worms.

I would guess he has a worn spider blank that is holding the barrel gear stuck into the housing.

If you have ever struggled to get a high mileage OD housing removed from the barrel gear so you can get to the special nut, you know how tightly those get stuck together. I am guessing someone shoved it back together after removing it from the donor vehicle, and it is stuck again.

Not sure how you could get it back apart again without damage, unless you could get a slide hammer attached to the barrel gear and try to knock it back apart with inertia.

I hung one over my work bench, nice and square, and tapped it with a bearing hammer. It eventually slid it's way off.

Long story short I need to separate my OD from my D18. It's not coming off easy and my concerns are with pulling out the output shaft of tranny. What can I do ensure I don't screw up any internals during removal?

They're a snug fit. Unbolt the 5 bolts that attach it to the tcase and use 2 screwdrivers or small prybars to gently work it back.

I agree- mine is on the tight side & it takes some work with the pry bars to separate the pieces.

I can get it off. Has only been on a couple of days. My question was really what can I do to prevent my transmission output shaft from moving in the process.

The trans shaft won't come out while the tcase is bolted up.
