Well I joined the ODPA failure club this weekend. Started the LJ on Saturday and was greated by the laughing monkey. It went away after the engine warmed up but has gotten a little worse each morning. Replacement parts are on their way. I just hope it does not break before I can replace it.

Stripperguy on jeepforum has an interesting mod to fix this. I may send my old one to him for modification and refurbishing then swap it back in.

Dad's '06 was making noise the day we got it home, ~27K miles. Replaced with a factory OPDA, cam gear looked fine.

I am hoping I caught it soon enough to minimize the damage.

Good news is the Brown Santa will be delivering the parts tomorrow. I just need to figure out how to replace it. Should not be too difficult.

    Easier than swapping a distributor.;)
The new one will be held in place with a plastic, pin. Put the engine on TDC, pull the old unit, stab the new one and pull the pin.

I googled ODPA cuz I have no clue what that is and I get.. Ohio Dairy Producers Association, Occlusive Disease of the Peripheral Arteries, an Optometrist, Octadecylphosphonic acid, Oxydiphthalic anhydride, Orange DOg Park Association, asymmetric oxydiphthalic anhydride, And a few other goodies, none of which seem to relate to Jeep..

    Little help for the Bubbba??

Hmmm Old Dodge Parephenalia Assessor? Orange Dog Pale Ale! Yeah that's a good one!!!!

Is actually OPDA or Oil Pump Drive Assembly. It is a known problem on the 05-06 wranglers.

    Thanks Patrick,

I figured it was not difficult. I just had not looked at the procedure yet.

Easy swap once I removed the airbox. I removed the top of the OPDA and manually rotated the engine until the alignment holes lined up. Then just swapped them out.

There was almost no wear on the drive gear and the CAM did not show any indications of wear. Looks like I caught it before any damage occured.

This is the first cold morning since the swap. Jeep started up quiet and smooth. No laughing monkeys. YAY!.

Lynn, mine has 72K on it and it just started.
