If you spray paint it, I would take off the grill, fenders, and windshield frame, paint them, then the tub and put it all back on.
sand it, wet sand it, wipe it down with a solvent, and paint.

Anyone ever use rustoleum and rollers? Here are the instructions a friend sent me.

I have another option for you than rattle can, and it will probably cost the same and will probably come out a heck of a lot better. Pick up a quart of Rustoleum and container of the clear mineral spirits (I tried the milky looking stuff and it didn't work that great). Get the 4" dense foam rollers (for cabinets) and you roll that paint on. Sounds weird and I was skeptical, but have painted most of my Bronco like that and it's coming out great. Not like a mirror, but 10 times better looking than when I was rattle-canning. It is roughly a 1 to 1 mixture (paint and mineral spirits). Prep your surface, can paint right over old paint or whatever. The only thing I would recommend is if you have any bondo on there, I'd prime that with a couple coats before painting. Once your surface is ready, roll on a coat and let it dry. Next day, repeat. When the second coat is dry, wet sand with 800 or 1000 grit, then two more coats. Wet sand again. Two final coats for a total of 6 coats. Then you buff. I haven't buffed because I don't care if the Bronco looks like a mirror or not, but even still I can see my reflection half way across the garage. It goes on nice and even not like the splotching you get with rattle cans.

The main problem with Rustoleum is that it's not catalyzed. You can get a nice shine, but it will never be very hard.

The paint portion of my restoration was by far the biggest frustration of the whole project for me. Like someone said before. I took my stripped down tub to several autobody shops and showed them everything they had to do. Even with my providing the replacement panels, the highest price was $10K!!... and that was just for the body work on the tub only; no paint. Most all body shops these days are assembly lines. I made an executive decision to buy a new tub. I finally found a guy that does hot rods in a shop behind his house. He quoted $1400 and 4 weeks. $500 on top of that, numerous phone calls saying "well, I had insurance jobs this week, so I haven't touched it," I got my stuff back 4 months later. It's a descent paint job, but I already had him retouch the driver's side because 6 months later gasoline dripped down under the fuel neck and completely peeled off the paint. It was a fight because he said I shouldn't have dripped gas on it.....

Moral of this is......good luck getting someone to do it for how you agreed upon, what you agreed upon, and when you agreed upon

years ago about 1959 my grandaddy took me to a ww2 vets house to help him fix something & we couldn't find him. he wound up being in a little car shed off to the side of his dog pen. we went over to see him & he had what i remember as a round fendered ford car in there painting it. he was using a hot shot bug sprayer & was painting it like there was no other way. so it just goes to show.
on another note i had occasion while i was in afghanistan to show off our shop to an afghan general. they were painting a truck of some kind, a 5 ton maybe in the paint booth & when he saw that through the window he run around & opened the door & run in to watch (right in all that CARC over spray). found out later he didn't know you could SPRAY paint, only brush it. they also said he had to put on shoes for the tour.

I striped my tub completely down and hauled it down to Maaco and cost $600...that was changing the exterior color, and then painting the inside black, and undercoating (including the engine compartment)...told him to throw someone new on there if he wanted...I was just looking for a 50ft paint job. Turned out great...if the sun hits it just right and your standing in the right spot you can see some flaws, but nothing unless your really looking.

I didn't give up. I'm just busy doing other stuff. I hope to finish it over Thanksgiving and see if I can get it paintable. If not, I'm going to use Monstaliner and try to spray it and get as smooth a finish as I can........

After I rolled my first '66 CJ5 on the street in the early '70s, I got a new tub, two fenders and a hood from a Jeep place in L.A. Borrowed a small portable 110V compressor and bought a new Sears, not even Craftsman, spray gun. With no experience I painted everything orange inside and out. I don't remember even using primer, but I must have. I got the paint from an auto paint supplier. I remember some kind of reducer but no catalyst.

I painted my Jeep in my family's garage with plastic covering almost everything in the garage. A lot of things got an orange tint including my hair. I still have some things that are slightly orange.

My Jeep came out perfect except for a run below the embossed Jeep on the driver side. I wished I could remember how I did it. I don't remember sanding or prepping the grill or dash or anything. I must have filled some holes because the hood was a '69 version with holes for side reflectors which I still have but did not use. It was a complete color change.

Since then I have not painted any cars. I have always had them done by shops. I intend to paint my new Jeep the same way again. Maybe with better equipment this time.

Paint it yourself. I say go for it. R)

I just finished all the body work on mine, including etching primer, sealing primer, and long blocking it. Spent about $300.00 in materials. The color I'm going to paint it is almost $600.00 Qt. I plan on 2 coats of color and at least 3 coats clear, then wet sanding all of it before buffing and re-assembling. I am going to use Lizard Skin, tinted the body color, on the bottom of the tub and inside the fenders, and inside the tub. I figure I'll be into paint and body work about $2000.00, not including any labor.

Petit Easypoxy is a marine 'topside' paint. It is a 'onepart epoxy'. It keeps a decent sheen (thanks to the silicone/polyurethane composition) -- I roll/brush it on. It can be sprayed as well.

That's what I use on my trail rig.
