Pretty soon there will be more sticky's than posts. Maybe people should just use the search function.

The sticky was just a thought for the new guys coming in and asking without realizing the deluge of threads about flat towing. To be honest with you, when I hit the search button I get 121 threads about flat towing, and now this one with the mods posting about knuckle pudding.

Even with the search button, I had some trouble finding the answer to the fellas question about why his steering wouldn't straighten out and none of the links posted so far on this thread worked for me. I talk to a friend about it and he said he had a jeep lock up after a hard turn once and by the time he got it stopped, the jeep was still on two wheels with a bent tow bar. He trailered his from then on.

The thing that got me about this flat towing thread is that until I started reading it, I didn't realize I should keep the tranny in gear. After utilizing the search button and about 20 minutes of digging, I found out about the bearing not getting oil to it and how if you leave the tranny in neutral, it "sometimes" spins with the transfer case. This is all news to me and I'm glad I read about it since I just started flat towing my own but I've been leaving the tranny in neutral. Something I never thought about until now.

Here was sort of what I was thinking of when I mentioned the sticky. I found this last night while googling more info on flat towing.

    http://forums.jpmagazine.com/70/645...jeep-towing-can-i-flat-tow-my-jeep/index.html

This forum doesn't seem to have near the knowledge base as this one does, but it's kinda cool to see the break down of each setup and tranny. Having said that, it doesn't go into detail about why you need to do stuff like keeping the tranny in gear on the d-20 but it does tell the new guy what he needs to do.

It looks like I may have opened up a can of worms with this one, and it sounds like the mods here are beat down with the same flat towing questions, but regardless, it seems like good info for all jeepers to know about considering the number of jeepers that flat tow their rigs.

Pardon me for bringing this up. I won't say another word about it.

Sorry you feel so strong about this.......yes it HAS been beat to death.
I am willing to bet that if you spent more than 20 mins using the search feature you would have found all kinds of new stuff. Nothing.......I mean nothing new has surfaced that I can tell in this "yet another flat tow post"

I am willing to bet you spent at least 20 mins on Google.

Its not so much we are beat, but it also takes up space on the server to keep up, thus the search feature.

My '66' has the Warn hubs on the rear. No problems with steering.

My take on your ?? is that the caster on the front axle may be off a bit.If it is off the wheels don't want to return to nuetral position.I would rather have a little more positive caster than negative. Makes a big differance in the way your vehicle handles.towing or driving.

Maybe there should be a sticky on all the "Dead Horse" threads. How do I find my vin number? The year on my title doesn't match my jeep? What motor bolts into my 60 year old Jeep without any mods? What do the seven wires on my turn signal switch go to? Where can I find NDTs? Did my Jeep come with 15 or 16" rims? How do I put an HEI in my 225? What pertronix model do I order? How good are Juan re-pop tubs? Are Lock-rights as good as a Detroit? How do I put disk brakes on my 25 front axle? Do I have to change the proportioning valve if I install disks? Should I run an electric or pto winch? Why does my gas cap leak? How do I convert to 12v? Can I make a roll bar out of sch. 40 Pipe? Will a Cruiser starter fit on my F-head? How do I time my F-head? Do I go Saginaw or reverse steering? What Dana 60 bolts under my Flatty?---I am sure I missed some

I don't know about you but I learned a LOT by looking at the static stuff (stickies???) when I first started hanging out here. It also gave me a place to point people when they asked repeat questions. You know like the dimensions of a CJ OR the real model number of their CJ based on the VIN...

I gotta agree with Billy on this. I've replied so many times with the same info on certain subjects like flat towing and T-18's that it's getting so I don't even want to reply any more. New questions about it don't bother me or clarification, but the same old stuff just gets old.

I have the Warn floater rear axles and hubs on the rear. I towed my '66' from New Mexico to California then to Colorado, then home. There were no problems as it was just as if I had disconnected the drive shaft. In this case, the rear differential didn't even turn.

It is a bit expensive, but when you compare it to a trailer it looks a bit better. I'm not sure if they even still make them. This set up has given me 0 problems, and the rear brakes are one heck of a lot easier to check. The drum just slides off in your hand. I don't think I even have my puller any more.

Warn doesn't. They sold the parts and tooling to Randy's Ring and Pinion who is sitting on it. Hermtheoverdriveguy is making a kit for the offset CJ 44 rear. R&P has built a bunch recently and is working on a kit to use Dana 60 bearing hubs and locking hubs with larger diameter shafts that don't neck down like Herms but still have the 5 lug bolt pattern (5 on 5 1/2"). Gotta call Richard Monday and see where they are with it...

    Edit:
Should also mention R&P, Holbrook's, Smittybilt, and others were building FF kits before Warn was. R&P and Holbrook's were consulted before Warn started production. I know this as I was working for R&P when the consultation happened and was building my ff kit and finished it a couple months before Warn prototyped theirs. If I had waited a couple months I would have been a test bed for their ff kit but didn't know it at the time...
