I just installed a Solex carb on my 1962 CJ5 - It's running better than before but there are still some issues. One problem I've been experiencing is I sometimes get a backfire when I shift - I let off on the gas, shift and "boom" as I bring the power back in. If I hold a little power in during the shift I can usually avoid the backfire. Any ideas?

In the exhaust, or up through the carb?

Mine backfires also, but I know it's because of an exhaust leak. Might check that. HTH

If its still backfiring after checking the fuel and timing, may be worth it to check the clearances on the lifters.
I adjusted them a few weeks before you got it from me and I've had issues in the past with having to adjust them a couple times to get them to stay tightened down.
    Just another idea.

Thanks all.... I pulled a spark plug out today and it was pretty sooty - I don't know whether it's from the original or Solex carb so I'm going to put in new plugs and see what they look like after driving it a bit. I appreciate all the suggestions and hopefully can figure out what's going on.
