    Hi All, I have a 1960 cj5, all stock.

I get a very loud whining noise while in third gear with light accelerating (driving 35-40). Goes away if I give it more gas or let of gas. I have read the threads that describe a "normal whine" noise but this is very loud - not normal.

I have read that it could be transfer case and intermediate shaft and bearing. Would that be a good first place to start. My local mechanic wants $400.00 to just tear down tranny and t/c for diagnosis. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions.

it sounds like the t/c to me.
i rebuilt mine a few months ago.
if you do a search for t/c rebuild you will hit the jackpot.
lotsa pictures and blow by blow actiuon.

Thanks, I find it strange that this noise happened right after I had my mech. drain and replace tranny/tc oil. Could low oil level cause this too? - it is leaking.

Your tranny and transfer case share the same oil so when he refilled the tranny (and maybe not the transfer) that would leave the tranny very low on oil. Will make it whine like mad.

do you have the factory service manual yet?
our old jeeps are pretty much a cinch to work on (compared to anything else i have ever owned)
checking those fluids yourself is super easy.
you done even need a jack.

Like was said check fluids. If synthetic was put in drain and put regular gear oil in. Might fill out your profile with location. We may have a member close by that could help you.

Thanks guys! Fluids are all at correct levels and GL4 was used. Turned out that the transfer case was shot. Will be rebuilding.

    Thanks again
