I recently broke my fuel and temp gauges messing around back there. I'm sure you all know how fragile those things are, especially when they're old. I know by the fact that I have about 10 of them and they are all broken. I went and bought a new fuel gauge at a jeep shop but the gauge pinned to full when my tank was empty. I then remembered when ordering my poly tank, that I had to match my sending unit up with the correct ohm's that the gauge used. My fuel sending unit is from a "jeep v6". I never thought i'd ever say it as I love the vintage stuff, but I think I might ditch the stock fuel and temp gauge for aftermarkets. Actually the reasoning for this is because I have two open holes in my dash that would look great filled with a gauge. So can anyone help me out in buying an aftermarket temp and fuel gauge that would work with my stock v6 fuel and temp sending units? It'd be much less stressful then buying something that pins on full again.

Most manufactures have the specs for their gages and senders on their web sites. SW has units that are available for different ohm ratings. Might be difficult to mix and match on the fuel, but a new temp sender would be an easy install to match what ever gage you get for that.

I used Auto Meter for my temp gauge but you will probably have to have a different sending unit from the one you have. I don't know what to tell you about a fuel gauge as I got a NOS cluster for my CJ 5.

I have a 66 CJ-6 with the fuel tank under the drivers seat. I ended up with a Autometer #2516 Gauge. Somehow I determined my sender was of the type 240 ohm empty and 33 ohm full. Can't remember how I arrived at those numbers. I also bought a replacement Omix float/sender unit for the under-seat tank. It all seems to work fine.

After some discussion with the people at 4wd.com, apparently you're supposed to "calibrate" the sending unit by bending the arm until it reads correctly:oops:

If you don't have a good ground wire going to your sending unit, that will cause the gauge to peg full also. I'd check that first before you take anything apart.
