Since the engine swap I have been using an inline electric fuel pump to feed the 5.0 EFI. It is mounted to the front of the fuel tank skid-plate up & out of the way of trail obstacles, about even with the top of the tank. It has bee running great until lately, seems with our hot summers the fuel pump is sucking up a lot of heat and the gas is vaporizing when it gets hot. It seems that the heat from the exhaust and the extreme heat coming off the pavement (this is only happening on my way home from work in the afternoons) is too much for it. So, should I try finding another spot for the pump say on the outside rear of the frsmerail, even if it means sacrificing some protection, or look at other options such as an in-tank pump? Do any of you know if there is an in-tank pump made for the plastic MTS tank I am using? I really dont want to have to switch tanks again or swap to a fuel cel if I can avoid it. Would an insulated heat-shield be a viable option?

You could mod a Jeep 4.0 HO in tank pump or run the pump you have outside the rails and build a U shaped skid that could be bolted to the frame as a skid/ protection.........my vote would be outside frame with skid btw

Another question was this a used pump, cheap aftermarket, and what was the rating (pressure and volume) of the pump vs. a stock pump from the vehicle the 5.0 was salvaged from? If it was marginal to begin with and is getting worn now.....

If you want an in-tank pump, there are instructions somewhere on the net for adapting a Chevy pump ... found it - here's a link to links on the BinderPlanet site http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49496

Assuming the pump is good, a simple sheet metal heat shield will be very effective.

    Nick,
it is a high end BKK inline pump for a Mustang 5.0
Tim, thanks for the link, will look into this option if the relocation/skid dont do the trick.

Thanks for the advice. Guess it's time to start wrenching again.

I would try a simple heat shield first.
I have one separating my exhaust muffler from my floorboard and there is a tremendous difference in floorboard temps.

I thought about that too, maybe wrap the pump with exhaust insullation & build an aluminum shield,,,,, got possibilities, however I wont be working on anything for a few weeks, wrenched my lower back and doc says I have to do more than take it easy till it mends.

I don't think you should wrap the pump-it still needs to disipate heat. Staple or rivit the wrap on the inside of the shield. I mounted my pump on the inside of the frame rail on top of a 3x3x1/4" aluminum angle-the horizontal leg even with the bottom of the rail. It is essentially right at the rear spring hanger. It was the lowest position I could find and not get it tore off. I am using a Walbro pump and it has worked perfect for the 2.5 years the FI has been on the Willys.
