Like the title reads...My T90 has always had some issues of grinding a little when putting it into first gear. Is that because it is not synchronized as 2nd and 3rd? My friend who used to be a truck driver said in the big rigs he would have to double clutch it to put it in first without grinding. Is this issue normal for the T90 and if so, how does one approach putting the tranny in 1st at say a stop light or stop sign?
    Thanks,
    Paul

1st is not synchronized and will grind into 1st when down shifting without double clutching.
if at a stop it is a matter of holding the clutch and wait for everything to stop moving before shifting.
its one of those things that will be natural after a while, and you may find yourself double clutching into second every now and again out of habit :)

Also check the clutch adjustment. If off it can keep the input driving slightly even when the clutch is disengaged (pushed in).

Its normal. When i was beating on my 60 cj5 and the brakes stopped working entirely i would just downshift whenever i wanted to slow or stop and I had the same issue. Double clutch it, it'll work just fine.

From a stop when going from neutral to first get in the habit of hitting second gear then going into first. It stops everything from spinning so you wont grind into first gear.

That's what I do also. It has become enough habit that I can do it pretty quick without even thinking about it now.

I do this in my DD with syncro first gear. It just falls into first way easier that way. Actually I have been doing it for long enough I don't even think about it anymore and had a friend ask me about it last weekend.

I double-clutch shifting into first in my VW. Mostly force of habit, but it does help to make it go in easier...

I also start out in second if I'm rolling at all - another old Jeep habit.

Realize that you never need to downshift into first on the street. If you are rolling at all, you can start off in second. If you are at a dead stop, wait for the gears to stop spinning, or go 2nd-1st as suggested.

Dropshifting from fourth, or third, or god forbid fifth or sixth into second or first on a modern transmission like the NV4500 still isn't a good idea, I still row my way down even if I may not be letting the clutch out in each gear.
