I have a late 60's/early 70's Warn series 8000 winch on my jeep that my dad put on back in that era. Model I think says 5721. It has the 3 controls on the dash and is a power in only winch. I even have the owners manual.

I would like to upgrade to a power in and out model with a remote like all the newer ones. Does this winch have any real value? I am not concerned with era specific items when it comes to safety. I just put on 3 pt seat belts and would just like a newer winch. Any opinions of value?

    thank you,

    Peter

That particular winch I've seen go anywhere between $50 and $350 depending on condition and how complete. A later Warn 8274 should be very close to a bolt up to your existing mount and has power in and power out and a much better braking system. Seen them go for $275 to $600 used depending on condition, how complete, and which version. The 8274-50 is an upgraded version with better motor and solenoids but tends to bring more money. If you don't mind changing mounting/fab work an M-8000 is a lower profile unit that works great in a lightweight Jeep. Can be had new for around $500 if you are patient and hunt for deals. Used in the $350-$450 range and even cheaper if you are patient. Make sure you get the controller with it. If someone has a winch for sale without the controller on the internet it's suspicious in my mind....

I have run a 5721 since I bought it new back somewhere around 1973. I am sure it has wound literally miles of cable during that time span. It has never broken down or in any other way failed but I do let it cool down if doing heavy work (limit the duty cycle).

And yes, only power-in. That said, there probably have been only a couple occasions during that 34 years that power out would have been nice to have. The brake is a bit on the funky side but that can be cured (hydraulic disc brake on mine). For the most part, the early Warn/Belleview winches are way more heavy duty than the 8274 replacements and I am sure Warn dumped them primarily due to the manufacturing cost-probably nearly twice what the 8274 took. They certainly do weigh more.

While the mounts are similar to the 8274 and they use the same fairlead, they are not the same. The 5721 is a 6 bolt mount while the 8274 is 4 bolt on a narrower width and height-in short, the only hole that is the same is the left lower hole though the fairlead.

If it still works well, I can see no reason to swap it out unless someone gives you a freebe 8274:)

Warn dumped that particular winch due to demand for a better braking system and power out. I'm sure manufacturing costs played in there though.

Warn was involved in a law suit about 15 or so years ago where someone hard wired a toggle switch for that style of winch in their dash, turned it on, and left it on as they were feeding in the cable. The cable wound around the guys leg and cut it off. The guy tried to sue Warn. Because of this Warn will not make or sell parts for these winches and in fact had a buyback on them. You could trade in your old version and for next to nothing get a new 8274. That's not the case any more. (It's nice having close ties with some people at Warn Industries)

I agree, they are one hard pulling winch. The lack of power out was problematic for me and very poor brake was a real issue. Almost lost my Scout Terra over a cliff when it started slipping in the ice and snow one time. Having been in Search and Rescue power out was very important for me.

Well it was something similar that inspired this:

And as to the knucklehead that wired it on a toggle-there just isn't a cure for stupid. Pretty easy to make your own remote also-12 gage 2 wire extension cord with momentary on one end, banana jack on the other wired in parallel to the regular momentary switch.

    That's a nice setup Duffer!
I built my own remote also. Was easy to do. I also doubled up on the solenoids so if one stuck on the second would shut down the winch. Seen that happen before and it was ugly.
I agree, can't fix stupid, but I've seen non momentary contact switches wired in the dash for winches so many times it's no wonder Warn wants nothing to do with them any more. You just can't control the actions of stupid people and with the lawsuit happy people in this world....

The 8074 will also bolt up to your existing mount.

Are you able to share more details on how you set up the disc brake and what parts and fabrication are needed? I have the Warn 5687 with remote cable controls on the dash and the remote switch under the hood. I would imagine the 5687 should be similar to your model an I would be interested in converting to a disc brake?

What Billywam said x2!!!! I have three 5687's , like the old school appearance. I have considered either a mechanical/hydraulic/ pneumatic disc brake for mine, a hydraulic disc controlled by a hand e-brake lever between the seats would probably be best. One for winch, one for dana 18 e-brake. Possible donors include snowmachine/motorcycle/go cart hydraulic disc brakes, e-brake hand levers with small master cylinders (foreign cars/Wilwood/CNC) thoughts?

My dear old Dad told me "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". You have a working winch, why change it? Just cause the other is newer, doesn't mean it is better.

A braking system that works from the factory, power out, parts availability. Just a few things that are attractive about the 8274 and 8274-50
