My Dad purchased a cj5 Jeep and knows nothing about it. What year did they stop having a cut out for the snorkel on the hood? His has one.

By the mid - 60's. But, the hoods are so easy to swap around, a snorkel cutout is not the best way to ID a year of a Willys. Plenty of other clues to look for.

May not be a Willys, either.
Open the hood and look at the firewall. there should be a small vin tag on the drivers side that you can get the VIN number from, and that will tell you (us) what year you have.

If the CJ5 has what looks like a battery box lid on the cowling on the passenger side, it will be an earlier model from before AMC took over in '71.

The VIN is hard to read, but I think it says 57543 126059 or the first number may be 57549.

One would think that this issue would be more definite. The article says before 65? Yet i am the second owner, first was a fire dept, of a 7,000 orig mile Jeep that I know has it's original hood and it has a snorkel cutout. So the question is - why some got it, why not all CJs after 65? Just had too many in inventory and were mixed in with later hoods? Where is Holmes when you need him(or timgr?)

I think that type of thing happened a lot. I have a 1955 CJ5 with a factory shackle reversal (left over from the M38A1). I've seen some CJ5's clear into 1957 with the same thing. Not all have that mind you, but some did. Kind of like they just used what ever was laying around.

My '66 CJ5 does not have the snorkel cut-out. VIN 8305 211706 made Approximately in Sept '66. CJ5Tim would you mind showing your VIN number and approximate build date?

The parts supply at most manufacturer's works on a "last in, first out" basis. That works like this, they have "bins" of parts. When they get new parts, they're simply dumped on top on the other parts that are already in the bin. When they need a part, they grab one off of the top of the pile. New parts may be added to the bins several times before they use all of the parts in the bins. Consequently, older parts tend to remain in the bottom for along time until the usage exceeds supply (and the accumulated excess) and the users reach the bottom of the bin. When they do reach the bottom of the bin, then there's suddenly a spurt of old parts showing up on new equipment. In actual case studies, they have found many, many examples of this and in many cases the parts may be a year or more older than the item that they were eventually installed on.

Something else that's common is that when a manufacturer reaches the end of the production for a specific model they often do a sweep of their plant and find all of the old parts that were sued as training aids, sales tools, engineering prototypes, display models or that may have had minor defects, etc etc etc. They then return these to production, so occasionally, some VERY old, odd and unusual parts show up. I live near a large US government contractor and I have some some amazing prototypes!

FWIW, widespread global communications and computer control and tracking are causing large inventory type systems to disappear. A LOT of manufacturers are now going to a Just In Time supply system and it's now possible to keep no more than a VERY FEW days supply on hand but then automatically order parts as needed and have them delivered within days or even hours! The BMW Z-3 (now Z-4) plant in SC operates this way and IIRC they have a good description of it on their website. One result of the end of large inventory supply systems is the lack of spare parts. Those inventories used to be used as a source for follow-up repair parts. Now the manufacturer has to specifically calculate, order and then store the number of parts that they anticipate may be needed for future repairs. And as anyone that's owned a late model car can tell you, the manufacturers seldom have all the needed parts even a year or two after production ends.
