Is this the 50's-early 60's "basket weave" stuff you're talking about? Got a pic of a sample available?

That company is owned by some friends of one of my students. Apparently they buy out now stuff from warehouses and whatnot. Canby is about 7 miles from my work. I can probably check them out next week if I can get away from work. I need to check some material out for my '57 also

Is this the material I'd need for a 63 CJ6?

This may or may not be typical - I recently ordered material from SMS, for a 1925 Ford.

A full month after they had charged it to my credit card, it had not arrived. When I inquired they said it was "on the shipping shelf."

Five days later, I still haven't received it.

Ok, someone, anyone... can you answer my question? The seats from my 63 CJ6 appear to be canvas. Were they originally vinyl like the material discussed in this thread? Help, I'm confused now, maybe mine were recovered at some point. Please help me out.

    Pushed the trigger.

Just ordered 5 yards of the basket weave in red + a couple yards of the cowhide.

They don't actually have NOS basket weave, they have a pattern & get it made up, hence the 5 yard minimum.

I'll let you know how it turns out in a month or so when it shows up.

More than likely recovered. I'm no knowledge base, but I wouldn't imagine canvas was a stock fabric for civilian Jeeps. Could be though.....

Canvas OD seat covers were used on the military Jeeps, but are smaller than civilian, flat and squarish in shape.

Updating on SMS Auto fabrics - I have been waiting six weeks now since they took my order and charged my card - after saying they "had the fabric."

Two weeks ago, a month after ordering, I was told it was "on the shipping shelf" ready to go.

One week ago I emailed a query and never got a reply.

Today I called and was told they "need to order a roll" and "it should have been in by now."

Obviously not all of these answers can be true. Researching SMS on line I found a slew of customer complaints going back years. Some people report having waited over a year, and some never got their (pre-paid) orders at all. Examples here... <http://www.imperialclub.com/Part/Vendors/SMS.htm>

While the opinion seems to be that SMS have a great fabric inventory and seem to be "nice" people, many comments posted referred to inconsistent and untrue customer service responses, and extremely late or "never" delivery times.

    Buyer beware.

    It Came!

Not quite the as fast as advertised, it shipped on May 31st so probably closer to six weeks for them to get it from the mill.

    Still, it's here & it's the correct pattern. :)

What a good thread this one. When I get to this point in a few years of restoring my 64 CJ, I'm just going to order the closet match and take it to some friends of mine who are upholsterer's...I work on a USAF base and we refurbish C-130's so I have a whole bunch of knowledge and help on this one...
