Safety Goggles!

I recommend safety GOGGLES or a face shield when cutting steel with a jigsaw, not the safety glasses, even the wrap around kind.

Today I was just cutting some 1/8" thick steel with a jigsaw and was wearing my wrap around safety glasses by 3M. A small fleck of steel bounced off my cheek up under the edge of the lens then ricocheted off the inside of the lens into my eye. I thought I was being safe, I mean it was only a small jigsaw, not like I was grinding or anything!
Maybe I put too much faith into safety glasses. I dunno?
Anyhow my wife thinks she got the fleck out, but my eye sure is irritated mehh

 

If it doesn't get better soon, you'd better head to an eye doctor.

I had a piece of metal in my eye for 12-14 hours (maybe few hours longer) and it began to rust and was somewhat serious. I didn't even know I had a piece of metal in my eye until I was going to go to bed and closed my eye, then the pain hit. It didn't hurt while I had my eye open just closed. Found an eye doctor the next morning and he removed the rusty metal. I had to put eye drops in for a week.

It goes to show that one can't ever be too safe. Even with safety gear things still happen. I'm amazed I'm still alive considering all the stuff I used to do with NO safety gear at all.

Hope the wife got the entire piece out and your eye is just irritated from the activity.

Yep go get it checked out. It is not a good thing to leave in.

Every time I have gotten steel or junk in my eye I was wearing safety glasses, I now wear a full face shield.

 

been there done that , if it's still bothering you I'd get it looked at ,,,, if I went to the dr. it's serious........ don't let that flake rust in your eye , I have had them go in with a cool spinning mini ice creme scoop thing .

 

Yep, not something to be a tough guy about. Broken bones, sure, have a shot o' whisky and keep goin'. But don't mess around w/yer eyesight.

 

Back in the late 80s I had a metal sliver removed from my eye, it went straight in and the doc needed magnification to remove it. What I remember most about that experience was the nurse. One of the prettiest things I've ever had lean over my face!

Anyhow... irritation is subsiding and we're getting back to normal, I think we are debris free. Eyes are not to be trifled with.

 

Good to hear. Eye patches are only cool on Halloween. Arrrrrgh!

GOGGLES GOGGLES GOGGLES ! about ten years ago an older friend and mentor named Ed, lost his eye. He was drilling a 1/4" hole with a 3/8" drive corded drill into 3/8 thick steel. The drill bit caught and broke sending tiny little pieces flying...one stuck in his eye, the damage had been done instantly, we now call him " One Eyed Ed". Ed was an Marine in Nam and was a Maritime welder and steel worker for 30 years. His many years of experince always made me wonder how such a simple little drill and drill bit could have been the cause of one of his worst injuries...until today! Today I had a 1/8 drill bit in a 3/8 drive drill shatter and pieces flew at me bouncing off of my cheek and my safety goggles. I thanked Ed at that moment for making me swear to wear them...and I realized instantly, that promise and the googles had just saved my eyes from very serious injury. PLEASE wear them when drilling, grinding, cutting hammering, impact wrenching, spraying solvents..etc just. WEAR THEM when you are working period!

 

Along the same line, when I was pulling the rusted exhaust off my JEEP during the rebuild I was wearing goggles and finished getting it apart. Stood up, took off the goggles and proceeded to wipe my face with a towel. I must have had flakes of rust on my face because one ended up in my eye. It hurt so I rubbed it - bad idea!! A trip to the ER and a trip to the eye doctor later all is well but I was being safe, just didn't think about knocking it into my eye from my face.

 

Even under your welding shield! Was doing some welding Sunday and raised my shield to knock a piece of slag off and a piece hit me in the eye. I wasn’t sure it actually stayed in there as it didn’t really bother me bad till yesterday. I went to the eye doctor and they had to use this little drill thing to get it out. So lesson learned the hard way I guess.

 

I always wear them under my welding helmet. Just habit from doing arc welding on job sites. I’ve even had sparks bounce around inside my helmet when welding underneath something at an awkward angle.

 

That sounds horrible. I try and wear safety glasses all the time because it seems like I always get something in them if I don't and even sometimes when I do.

 

It is bad when slag goes in your ear canal and you can hear the wax boiling

That sounds horrible! Thank you my eye feels ok this morning. They put some kind of contact/bandage on it so I don’t feel the wound. Gotta go back Friday and have it removed.

 

Been there too. I always wear my safety glasses (prescription) but things still manage to get behind them. Last time I went in they used a dremel on me followed up by what they called a “spoon”. Then during my regular eye exams they typically used the term “peppered”.

My grandpa is another one that was a maintenance welder his whole life. A while back he got a big molten drop fall in his ear... and it went ALL the way in. Now that ear isn’t good for anything else but holding up Gus glasses. Imagine the last thing he heard out of that ear.

 

I always wear prescription safety glasses--but the above comments got me looking and there are a few options--just one shown.
