I have a 1955 CJ5 with a F 134 engine. It's serial number is 4FR155351. I've looked at the VIN and serial number thread and I can't make anything out of the number on my engine.

your serial number will tell you if your engine is the one tht is supposed to be there, i.e. it will give you the code for L F head 6cyl. i dont think there is a way to match serial number from engine to body. go to ask.com and typ in jeep vin decoder.

I don't think they did the Tuxedo Park 'till '61 as a trim option and then in '64 as the Mk IV with its own serial number identification, but I've been wrong before.

Is this from the title or the VIN plate?

According to the VIN document, there should be at least 10 digits in the serial number. You've only posted 9.

Christian (Dummy) is right, it does not make sense that a '55 would be a Tuxedo Park model. Something else is happening here...

Regarding the engine, AFAIK there is no sure-fire way to tell whether the engine that is in your Jeep is the engine it came with from the factory. The engine serial numbers were not keyed to the serial number. If you have a F134, that's the correct type for the original motor.

There's some info on the CJ-3B page about roughly matching the engine number to the chassis serial number. You might make some guesses about your engine number based on the info here - http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/SerialNos/SerialNosEngine.html - but you won't be able to match the engine to your chassis exactly.

The 7th digit thing is only good if your CJ is newer than '62.bunny with a pancake

A broken VIN seems to be common with Jeeps. Though illegal, titles get swapped around, and FrankenJeeps abound. I wouldn't worry much about it, unless you were interested in a Concours restoration, or there were outstanding title issues.

I've owned around 40 JEEPS,all but one were '85 and older.I've had this one the longest bought in '01.I joined this site in '02 and noticed (thanks to the site) it had alot of the "TUX" stuff left(badges, hood hinges,WS latches, etc.) I'm kind of a one licence tag fits all kind of guy as long as I'm insured. My Jeep has alot of conversions,I still call it a CJ5A.I'm proud to drive it daily in a Wrangler/Samuria world.I'm usually the lone Jeep on the trail surrounded by ATV's.My health and the economy not what is was ,is making my Jeep less practical.I pray I don't have to get rid of it but I seem to be caught between guys that won't get their Jeeps dirty, and the guys that can build awsome rigs that are to built to wheel w/me. This is the only place I can kinda relate.....Well I don't know what that was all about, guess "cabin fever" is hittin' me hard.lol
