Well my girlfriend will think im nuts but i couldnt pass up the rusty and crusty 66 cj5 i recently found. This was a runner but the block has a small crack in the waterjacket on the drivers side in between the freeze plugs, it was welded but wont hold so i suppose another motor is in order if i can find a 225 or 231 runner reasonably close. The floorboards are quite rusty but she is complete and was moving on her own till i pulled the motor. PO even fabricated a steel bikini top for it that is quite ugly lol. At first i was just thinking parts jeep for my 68 cj project but now thinking hunting mobile wont feel bad if i scratch the spray paint camo. If anyone in the oklahoma area has a v6 hanging around shoot me a comment.

    Thanks

    Aaron

sorry posted it in wrong area at first

if it runs and that's the only leak then I'd attempt to repair it before I condemned it.

If you can clean out the crack very good, you can mix up some JB Weld and get it in there good. Laugh all you want but I can point to more than a handful of old engines in tractors and trucks that have been repaired that way. The last one has held for 26 years now.

The metal has to be clean everywhere the JB Weld will touch. Drain all the fluids, and degrease the metal. Roughen it up with a wire brush and mix it carefully. Let it fully cure before putting pressure on it and you'll be alright.

You've got nothing to lose by trying it

I don't have any pics. All of those items were from my kid days when I could visit any shop in town and mechs would let me watch them work on anything.

They are asking for pics of your newest acquisition. We like pics here:)

I'd put an ad in the classifieds section for the engine or check places like Craigslist. Someone local may have something.

I'll get some pic's up tomorrow. Now my 68 project cj5 has a built evenfire 231 with comp 262 cam, holley intake, holley truck avenger 4BB, headers, rebalanced flywheel off the original 225 that i threw a rod threw the block on. I just dont want to use that motor in the old beater lol. Was thinking i might get some krylon and spray her OD green for the hell of it. I am gonna look around for an oddfire of some sort that i can toss in hopefully without having to rebuild and see how cheap i can put this one together. Has JB weld over the crack and still drips.
    Thanks

So here are a couple of pictures of the new to me cj-5. So i was looking at the hood and noticed that it is drilled for emblems near the front like a tuxedo park cj and checked the title and it is an 8322a. Is this thing a Tux? Looked up the vin and it is a cj5a. i just dont know anything much about the tuxedo park jeeps except they had chrome bumpers and a bench seat.

    Thanks

If the crack is only in the water jacket, does not go into 1 of the casting plugs, and is accessible, it can be repaired using 1/8 pipe plugs. The last crack I fixed that way I used brass ones. It made the job a lot easyer.

If you are interested on how to do it, PM me.

The Tuxedo Park package was a luxury package, and those Jeeps are more desirable. There were 1,190 built in '66. Here's an info page on it: http://www.earlycj5.com/history/tuxedo-park-mark-iii-and-mark-iv-guide/

IMHO, I'd stay away from modifying the Jeep any more than you need to. Not necessarily sell it or not use it as a recreation rig right now, but try not to modify it to where more of the original CJ5A is lost. JM2CW.

    Good luck with it!

I have a 66 with what I think is the "odd fire" motor. I bought the Jeep for the body and really cared little about the motor. It does not have a carb on it, but I was told that it is not locked up. I am in Bryan Texas if you are interested in it. I would be happy to let the motor and transmission go because that would be one less temptation to rebuild the thing.

Well since i happened on this jeep for 300 bucks and given that its a tux i wont be using it for parts for my other cj5 as i had originally intended. P.O. had a 79 glass body 5 but really didnt know much about the early jeeps so i guess i scored a decent deal. But it is complete and i believe for now i will repower her and use her as is and leave her for a future project but will probably be close to stock not lifted or highly modified. Guess then i will have to start searching for the little bits and pieces. Only one of these i have ever seen was sitting in a junkyard in washington state. Noticed the chrome bumpers but thought they would look kind of girly on my lifted 68 at that time. i was only interested in grabbing the transfercase and tailgate then. I still have to complete my 68 cj5, my 53 belair 2dr, and my 51 chevy 5 window truck before i delve any further into this one.

the back has ****ty universal trailer lights that someone mounted and crude sheet metal imitations of the diamond plate corners along with a monstrous pipe bumper and swing out rear tire carrier, has chrome winshield latches and hinges and hood hold downs that have been painted with camo spray paint that comes right off. grill is steel that was painted not chrome, interior dash chrome grab bar. After scratching some paint of it was some sort of creamy yellow, then was painted red, then john deer green to the now camo pattern. Speedo looks good shows 1k miles bet thats rolled over a time or two. Now i have a question my 68 had chrome windshield latches, hinges, and hood hinges, glovebox door and grill. Guess that was something you could order that year? Ill try and get some more pictures for you guys this wehttp://www.earlycj5.com/forums/images/smilies/chainsawguy.gifek when i have some more days off.

    thanks again
