NDT siping

    has anyone siped those old school NDT's?
    from what i have read they stink on wet pavement.
    i figure siping may make them more useful as i love the look of those tires

    I've read here that it's recommended to sipe them, because they suck on wet/slick pavement! Since I'll likely never find the tires of my dreams, I'll probably be buying NDT's and having them siped myself.

    Looking at the tread design I would expect them to still not do well on wet pavement. That big solid chunk down the middle is going to sit on top of the water whenever it can. Personally if you are going for a concourse restoration of a Military Jeep then they are cool. If you drive them I would go with something modern that works better on the road. Looks only get you so far when it comes to on-road handling.

    x2. My Dad, a WWII vet, said those tires were the absolute worst tires he'd ever driven on. He said he could never understand why the army put so many men's lives in danger with " those %&)@ty %$@ %^$#@% tires." He drove on them in the service and they came with his surplus '43 (?) GPW. He bought new tires for the GPW as soon as he saved up enough $.

    i am thinking they couldnt be any worse than those giant mudbogger tires whose tread seems to be 2"squares of smooth rubber?

    Put some radials on it. You'll be thoroughly impressed with how it handles on the street...

    A newer tread design is going to be better, they now build mud tires to be driven on the street. Some old design like a Bogger yeah not the best tire on the street.
    Think about it this way, NDTs are basicly a 3 inch wide smooth tire with lugs coming off of it.

    I like the look of them too but, I'm sure there is a nice vintage lloking tire that will be WAY safer. Like the town and country, STA conversation we had recently. Tooling around in the snow or rain, I would want something besides a NDT. I've no personal experience with them so maybe I shouldn't say anything but, no one I know who has used them was happy with them in inclement weather.

    All I know is that in the rain even with gaps in these tires the truck want's to slide right off the road, way worse on snow covered roads too.

    So we put some weenie tires on it to keep it of the ditches now that it's winter, and a $50 rustoleum paint job. I recommend that you find a tall skinny mud terrain or TSL for your jeep, those are good looking tires on a CJ5.

    It's not only about tread design, rubber compound plays a huge role in how a tire performs on the street. I suspect NDT's are made of some seriously hard rubber that wears okay but does little for traction. Newer compounds are softer, providing a lot more grip, while still wearing better than those old hard compounds that tended to be brittle as well.

    Let's not talk about Grip Spurs, unless you know where I can get five of them! 16" x skinny as possible, please. Out of production and made of unobtanium, AFAIK.

    the guy said he has gotten 30 calls about those in 2 months
    they destroyed the molds....

    Yeah, several of those calls were from me! Why stop production of popular items that sell well? Coffeemate killed off our favorite flavor a few years ago too. Makes me crazy.

    I still have hope, I was in a CO-OP in Oklahoma a couple years ago, and actually touched some of those tires. Gotta call 'em.

    We always used to call NDT's grave diggers. They look good on a miliatry style vehicle, but performance leaves a lot to be desired.
