Let's talk vintage ultra-low-tech plows..

Actually the push shovel with some small wheels to keep it off the ground would be great for my driveway( gravel) Hmm maybe a summer project. Dad should be able to use that without too much pain.

 

How much strain you put on the jeep and the ability of the jeep to move the snow depends on how deep the snow is and if is light and fluffy or wet snowman making kind of snow.

If you can plow the snow as it comes down and clear it away every 3 or 4 inches away, it shouldn't be a problem.

However if you wait until it stops snowing and the county plow has been through and plowed your driveway full of hard pack, then a jeep with a plow may be too small, too light and too short to break through. Most snow plows have springs to allow the blade to pivot downward if you hit a rock or hardpack snow. Without this spring action, you take the shock straight to the frame or axle where the plow is mounted.

I used to run chains on all four tires for traction as well.

a friend of mine has one of these, his machine is too small and underpowered to use it. It also has caster tires so you can adjust the plow heigth with shims. I cant remember how the angle is adjusted, it may very well be hyd. the machine itself raises and lowers the blade, so you would have to fab a frame of some sort....

 

Yeah the pivoting of the plow via springs part makes sense, a solid mount is not so good of an idea... but the fact that the borough plow trucks leaving me with hardpack at the bottom of my driveway may be a bit too much for me to plow is definitely not what I was hoping to hear - that's like the main reason for bothering to get a plow! LOL..I guess the only way to find out is to try, but the installation work and investment are steep enough that I have a lot of trepidation.

 

I have a line on an early Jeep plow with hydro unit and frame if you are still looking. I'm near Buffalo NY. Original "Jeep Approved" Equipment.

 

What about a blade for a atv. They make several sizes. Do you have a winch? You could lift it with that. I have one on my atv and it will push alot of snow.

Wait, you use your Jeep to push that around?? How is that mounted?
Doesn't it just "float"?

 

no i dont have one on my jeep. just thought some might find it helpfull. i love it works a hundred times better than a regular ol shovel

 

The blade on the atv is 50 inches. They make them up to 72". They also have a new mount that hooks up to the front of the atv instead of the bottom. I think it could be easily modified to fit a jeep bumper. You can see all the plows and parts at Denniskirk.com.

 

The "Jeep Approved" Meyer plow on my 3B is 6 foot. The one I had on my 5 was 6 foot also.
