Timing or dwell for the points could very well be off. Adjust/replace the points (if equipped) then adjust ignition timing and see where you are at. Point dwell will effect timing but timing will not effect the points. here's a place where a manual or the search function comes into play...

so went to work today was doing some plowing, and all of a sudden the jeep stopped running and had no spark. so i thought it mite be the coil that i had on there. (accel super coil) so i changed it to a universal regular one , still no spark. took the dist cap off and the cam piece on the points broke off. so i ordered on from the flps (surprised they one for a prestolite dist). put the point in and put the adjustment back to where it was, and no start.. could this be the condenser too would something like this go at the same time?

this may seem like a dumb question, but it has happened before  did you set the gap with the lobe in a "open position" or closed (flat spot) if you set it on a flat spot they will "never" close to produce a spark. and yes a bad condensor will cause no spark................................................... damn i am getting old, being knowledgeable about points

i set it to how it was when i took it off. it was on the round side in the open position that i set it .. when i put the new one back in i just noted where the position of the adj. screw was. but i didnt turn the engine over to see if it closed or not guess i should have.. but it was also getting dark when i got it back together. im trying to find in the manual what the gap should be, but im having a hard time finding it.

sounds like you might have lost the timing gear. sometimes they will jump a tooth and backfire and such then shear all the teeth if they are the old non metal type gears.

no i know i didnt lose the timing gear because i put a coil pack on the jeep, which bypasses the points, condenser , and coil among other things and the jeep fired rite up. this is how i figured it was the coil at first.

UEREKA I HAVE DONE IT. i changed the the point and condenser today, gapped the point to .011. ( the only feeler guage i had close enuf) jeep fired rite up and runs great the best it has ever ran. besides a slight hesitation when getting on the gas and letting off. i was so excited to took it for a ride into town, the farthest it has gone yet and didnt have any problems what so ever. i belive the po had the last set of points adjusted to far out. could be why it started so hard all the time. thank you everyone very much for the help. this site is so helpful.... happy jeeping :driving: :tea:

my book calls for.016 gap. thats for a 1966 225 in a buick. funny thing my book covers jeep as well but does not have a listing for the 225. every jeep engine it list from 1966-1973 calls for .016 as well

yes my book said the same thing but .011 was the only feeler guage i had that was close. so i compensated a little bit with the feel on the guage. and the book also mentions if anything you should gap a little tight, to account for the points wearing. if i can get my hands on a dwell meter then i will chack and make shure it is withing specs and fine tune :)
