what would be a fair price to pay for 74 cj5 11" brakes. i would have to replace everything including drums. the backing plates are good and true.

It's been a while, so I don't remember how much $$$ it cost me, but all you need are the backing plates to start. Everything else *should* be able to be bought over the counter new.

Too bad my 11" conversion is still sitting in a plastic tote waiting to be installed....

the going rate for just the backing plates has been $25-$50 each around here.
so, $100 for a complete pair of 11's would be about right.

so then paying $50 for both backing plates and maybe a usable drum is not that bad? these were taken off the front so i would need the rear wheel cylinders put on correct? i have some brand new 11 x 2 drums but are not the finned ones and cannot remember what they were for. would these work?

You can use the front plate with rear cylinders. You won't have any place for the cable emergency brake though, and that's one of the better aspects of the 11" Bendix brakes.

The drums being 11"x2" is necessary but not sufficient. They must have the right pattern and center hole, and they must have the proper depth wrt the mounting surface. So, maybe. Drums from a CJ rear with an AMC 20 axle are 11"x2" and have the right bolt pattern, but will not work as I recall. Just an example ...

Drums from a '71 axle converted to 11" brakes should work fine. Even if they are Ford brakes that have been converted, they will use the same drums and hardware as a Jeep with 11" Bendix brakes (say, from the '74 front). With the '71 11" rears and the '74 fronts, you should be all set.

    74 backing plate numbers are 3201047-L, 3201048-R
unknown backing plates are 3201051-L 3201052-R
all are bendix and 11x2 the brake drums that are new that i have are wagner bd60139? i called napa and they came up with 65-73 jeep cj's,trucks, jeepsters.
the 74 has finned drums and all the others that i have are not finned.

If you want to use '72-'75 front backing plates on a flanged axle Dana 44 rear there are two bolt holes that must be drilled (per backing plate) and the center hole needs to be opened up for the axle/wheel bearing and seal to pass through but can be done with a die grinder/dremel and the two holes are easy enough to mark and drill. I've done tons of 'em and it isn't difficult, just takes a little time and patience.
Around here 11" backing plates sell for $25-$50 each as Jpflat2a said.

There are a few parts you want to try and get with them if you can like the wheel cylinder pushrods and the "retainer" that fits on the top post. If rear with a park brake the strut and arm can be hard to find as well. Other than that all other parts are available off the shelf.

I agree with above and will add make sure you put the left rear backing on the left rear wheel or your hole for the ebrake cable will be facing the wrong way. Don't ask how I know this.

Also as Nick said see if these items come with backing plates because they are often not at your local FLAPS. wheel cylinder push rods and the "retainer" that fits on the top post, park brake strut and arm.

Backing plates in this area run from $15 to $25. And $25 plate isn't any better quality then a $15 plate. All of mine (4) required the little pad areas on the backing plates to be built up by welding and then grinding smooth.

I managed to buy the "retainer's" as new parts, but it was a bear to find them. Not having a clue what they're called didn't help, and I believe I had to order them at a Jeep dealership. Didn't cost much, but it was an expedition to get them.
