Hey, this is my first post on here.

I'm looking at two 1968 cj's right now, a f134 and a v6. Both are the same price and from the pictures they look to be in about the same condition. I'll probably just go with whichever one is in better condition since horsepower isn't too much of a deciding factor for me(even though that 134 only put out 75hp brand new).

My question is, when looking at older CJ's, are there any specific things that I should look for other than the obvious rust (frame, body, brackets), matching 13 digit vin's and other common sense stuff?

    Brett,
I have a F134 and really do enjoy it. It only goes 45-50 mph on a flat, so taking it on a freeway is not recommended. I have fun going to the shops, trails, and short trips that can be driven on the back roads. The 6 banger might better be what your looking for if you want to travel, but all in what you want.

Personally - the V6 wins unless there are other mitigating factors. Check the clutch, drive train, steering (closely), OD if it on it is worth extra $$$. As to the body - Hat channels on the underside show a great deal as to it's overall body. Frame cracks at the mount points and any possible 'fixes' that have been put on tells alot as well.

For me, this wouldn't even be a question. I had a 64 CJ5 with a F134. In '66' I saw how much better the V6 performed on climbing hills around Las Cruces. I had to have the V6. I've sure never been sorry. Even with an overdrive on the F134, the V6 got much better gas mileage and went down the road SO much better. The 3.63 gears behind the V6 engine made a tremendous difference.

Even if the V6 one wasn't in as good of condition, it is still the one I would pick.

Just my 2ยข worth. You may even want to give me some change back!
