I have a 68 CJ5 that i am just dying to do soemthing with.. The frame is great and so is the front and rearends.. springs aswell...BUT
I bought a 98 tj that I am parting out.. the frame is not bad at all.. I was thinking that the 4 coil ride would be great insted of the leafs..
I did some ruff measuring and I can put a set of longer front cj fenders on to get close to wheelbase leanth of the Tj...
    I have a great running 360 and a t18/19 tranny. I am srue I can come up wit ha drivers drop t-case.. oh I have a few...LOL

is just something I am toying with... I have the parts here so it's just my time into thee project..
    what do you guys think..
Here is a pic of the cj and the Tj

Fitting the coil buckers on the front is gonna be an issue to tackle.

from the ruff measurments I took it should nto be that bad as they are just about outside the iner fenders... and a little fender triming on the inside wont hurt anything... LOL
I will have to make my own mouts for the body so i am thinking I can left the body up enough to make it work and then run the over the top of frame headers I have for the 360.

Uhh, might re read that tape measure. Putting a long nose on an Early CJ bumps the wheel base for the body to about 84". A TJ is about 94".

    Taz,
I'd sell the '98 and concentrate on doing one of those early Jeeps right.
What is the second early in the picture?

yes that is right so I do not have to re read it.. and with open fenders in the front and the body lifted off the frame a bit 10" is nothing to cover up.
I was also thinking that I would cut the tj frame and shorten it... as it needs some fixing anyway...

well as I said I am parting the tj out..
as far as doing it right... not much to do to the 68 about 2 bads worth of body and paint.... not my point of what I was thinking of doing..
as far as the other cj its a 70 that is nothing but rust and parts.. I bought it becasue it had a rebuilt 360 in it..
I have a few cj's not worried right now about doing one that is right in your mind but i do understand what your saying...
I love the old ones stock... I want to do something different with this one...
I jsut bought a 67 with running 4 cly.. bodys not bad... frame and running gear is great.. needs front fenders and rad... $200.oo

Sounds like you've made up your mind already, so why ask?

10" is going to take more than lifting the body off the frame a bit.

If you shorten the frame up then it could be a cool project. IF you lengthen the body then it could be a cool project. But just to take the body off, add long nose fenders and pluck it on? Going to look very chainsawguy

Simply going off of your post. You said by adding long nose fenders it should fit. You didn't add all the rest. Again, for clarification, going simply off what you said.

Remember, other people read these posts when doing a search. Based upon what you said it gave the impression by adding long fenders an Early CJ-5 would be about the same wheel base which is simply not so. I'd hate to for someone 3 or 6 months down the road to get that impression.

Best of luck with your project.

I can't believe your parting out that 98 TJ. That thing looks great in your pic.

as most newer jeeps go.. the tranny is toast, the floor on the tub has been fixed 2 times, the frame is week on the drivers side rear, front fenders rotted... soft top bars all bent, hard top back window hinges cracked and the window fell out... ITS JUNK....
thay do not build them like the use too.. its no longer Jeep its Chry/dodge

Don't know how old you are but thank god its built by Chrysler, the way AMC built Jeeps it would have folded up long before now and not taken the abuse its had in such stride.
