Quick question for everyone running an L or F head engine.

What brand oil are you running?
    What weight?
Is the rear main leaking?(not weeping)

I ran Rotella in mine. 15-40. Best oil I found for it.... I'll run it in my SBC as well.
Rear man? it would weep a tiny bit. but that honestly depends on the condition of the seal, not really the oil choice.

Do NOT run Synthetic. You will only waste your money. Also it doesn't have the additives that the old engines rely on.

    As did I :D

shell SAE30 oil for engines prior to 1950, found it at advance auto. Its also a non detergent oil, really dont see a issue with it being non detergent as far as sludging up the engine (I change my oil like you are supposed to religiously) others change theirs less, and if it works for them thats all well and good. I have been changing mine at 3000 miles since i was 16, 37now with only one major engine failure and its the newest vehicle I own and had 120k on the clock when i bought it

And then if you REALLY want more performance, you gotta paint it red;);)

Oh, and I always used cheapo 10W-30 but I've been using Rotella 15W-40 in my old motorcycle and it likes it. I was told the deisel or heavy duty formulations are much more compatible with old style engines (similar lubrication and flow qualities, and no additives).

chances are if youve had your engine rebuilt in the last 20 years youll have hardened valve seats and modern seals and lead isnt nesessary

I've been using Lucas mixed with 10w30. I used it to thicken it up enough to keep it all from leaking out. Works, but the real solution is a new oil pan gasket....
