"(3) Hoodlatches: A front opening hood must be equipped with a primary and a secondary latching system to hold the hood in a closed position."
I have one on each side. Does one of them count as secondary?:rofl:

In TEXAS, doors are not required, nor is a top... but mirrors ARE. That's why I built these.

Ahh... Texas. In Colorado or Utah, your curb feelers would be ground off in ten minutes. And your feet...

Colorado Revised Statutes do not mention doors or lack thereof. There is a section prohibiting modification to stock exhaust systems to increase noise output. Hear that, straight pipe Harley guys? No, I guess you can't.

Very nice, but in Texas you only need 1 rear facing mirror. As long an you have the rearview on the windshiled you do not need side mirrors.

But it is nice to be able to run around without the doors on.

The law changes so much between regions that you really need to find your local laws ans read up on them. When I was rebuilding my CJ-5 I spent a lot of time looking at the vehicle code because I wanted it to be street legal.

Our local deputies carry a little paperback book with every state law they can enforce with them in the car. I go along with the other comment - do the Harleys have doors? Here you can drive a golf cart legally on the road if you register it and buy tags. We do well to have working brakes and one headlight.

What about layin' the windshield down? I live in southern OH.,ALOT of Jeeps on the road here, but I'm the only one driving 'round w/windshield layed down.I (and passengers) always wear eye protection.Get stares by,state, county, city,(good looking girlfriend, decent looking '65cj5) but never stopped. The railbuggy dudes don't seem to have a problem either.I do have a valid license, and insurance, which probably puts me ahead of alot of drivers around here.I did add an old motorbike mirror on drivers side since I lose the one on WS.while down.I don't believe motorcycles come w/helmets,but you have to wear one in W.Va.,sooo..I'm wondering if I cross the river into the mountain state w/no top, doors, seatbelts, windshield down, are they going to require occupants to wear a helmet?

It seems every year you hear about someone getting stopped for having no doors. It can't be the LEO's first day on the job, he must have seen it before, Jeeps have been around a long time.

I think being nice to the LEO is the right approach, or else you do end up with a ticket (for something) or worse, around here they could make you get your vehicle checked by Compliance, which they seem to think a lifted vehicle is an immediate fail.

I don't agree with pulling the doors off something that are bolted on like my Jeepster, or an XJ, or a half ton truck. IMHO that's asking to get the laws reviewed so no one can take doors off even if they were meant to. I heard one time the reason non tub type vehicles (like a Jeepster) had to have doors because they don't have a curb to keep things from rolling out. Likely someone made that up.

I find it funny the laws stated above make allowances for hot rods, no hoods etc, but everyone else has to comply. If it's safe for a hot rod to have no hood why not a passenger vehicle? Laws are strange.

Here if you register a vehicle as off road only (there are a few Jeeps in our club registered that way) you have to wear a helmet, it's considered the same as an ATV.

Windshields have been discussed here quite a bit, I know some have said it's legal if you have eye protection.

I have e-mailed this gentleman a few times. I asked for the link to the law he quoted me. It is very unclear. He says it is up to interpretation by the office. So I think he was cool with me because I am a older guy and not distroying stuff.
My jeep was setting in a parking lot with my teenage daughter in it, while I was in the hardware store. When I came out I think he was expecting a teenage kid! Not a older guy who has been running jeeps for a while.
his fella really had no idea how old my rig was and I think I overwelmed him when we were talking about jeeps and history.
Part of the law has to do with that lip at the bottom of the door.
He was so worried about the doors he never saw that I don't have one mirror on my jeep!

What do you mean "has to do with that lip at the bottom of the door." ? (kinda glad I'm in Armpit, Alabama at the moment on this issue) :)

A Postal Jeep does not have the lip around the lower part of the tub opening to hold loose items in. The doors do not come off easily, but are designed to be driven with them locked back fully opened. Wonder how the LEO would write that ticket?

    Dave,

What is the WAC code that the officer used? There are a few of us that would like to know what law he refered too.

hahahaha! You're probably right. Then again, if the user is stupid enough to use them at the wrong time, I guess "he" deserves to lose his "curb feelers" AND his feet. Sort of like disconnecting your swaybar, whether you do or not depends on your situation.

Colorado IS something else! We try to go every year, twice a year at least!

I will dig threw my e-mails and find the link. Then you will really laugh your butts off. I started comeing back at him with "Its a Jeep for god sakes". and calmed myself down because I new I was talking with someone that had no idea of hjeep history or usage. He was blown away when he found out it was a 74'.
The hinges are actually screwed on with sheet metal screws. Its a Bestop aftermarket top. I tride to explane this.
