I have a 76 CJ5 that I've owned for about 30 years. I was told when I bought it it had granny first but didn't believe it because of the way it drove in first (been sittin' for about 12 years now, getting it back on the road). So now I want to confirm which gears I have. Any to look for numbers on the case? 76 was a crossover year for the t18's in Jeeps. It could be either. Thanks.

My guess is you can tell by shifting it, the granny gear is pretty obvious, does the 4.03 one have sincro first?

Pull the floor pan and tell me the part number on the transmission tag.
    <edit> Never mind - the '76 4ST has a unique part number.

    Pretty sure it's 4.02:1.
<edit> Parts book says '74-76 use the same cluster gear, so the '76 gears are the same as the intermediates; therefore 4.02:1

Both types are unsynchronized in 1st. The T-19 has a synchronized 1st, but never appeared in a Jeep.

If you can actually drive it in 1st gear its not a granny geared box. The granny geared box is only good for about 5-7mph tops.

From what I have read and been told, the only years of Cj5's that came with the 6.32:1 was '77 '78 and '79. All others before '77 had the close ratio T18's. Great tranny reguardless but the granny gear makes it that much sweeter ha.

If you had 6.32 first gear you would know it
if you drive using first most likely 4.03s
pop clutch 4.03s will give you a little jolt
pop clutch with 6.32s you ll be in the back seat
also another factor is ratio in diffs

    From Parts Mike's page:

"The front input shaft is 10 spline x 1 1/16" and has stick out is 6 1/2" and has a tooth count of 17 or 23 teeth where it engages the cluster gear. A T18 with a 17 tooth input is the low geared (6.32-1) unit A T18 with a 23 spline input is a high geared (4-1) unit. The 6.32-1 Ford T18 will have two extra bosses cast on the front that will allow it to be installed against a GM bellhousing with relative ease."

or twist your drive shaft into a pretzel...assuming the u-joint holds long enough.

Best way to be sure is to pull the shifter top and count the input shaft gear teeth. 23 as the Partsmike quote indicated is the 4.02-1 first gear. 17 teeth is the 6.32-1 first gear.

Just for clarification the input shaft/gear pictured is a Ford unit. The Jeep '76-'79 unit had a small pilot tip the same diameter/size as the T-150 3 speed.
The earlier '72-'75 unit had the same input shaft length, splines, diameter, and pilot tip as the T-15.

i have a 74 cj5 and t18 trans with granny gear, I do not drive it granny at all it is not
syncro and I know I have 6.32:1. reason being I also had a t18 ford and had most of the
parts taken out of the t18ford installed into the t18 which part of that was the
shaft and gearing that reduced mine to 6.32, I really love that feature....great for a little
rock crawling and up and down those tough trails.....
