Well I started to disassemble the steering knuckle on my Dana 30 for ball stud/spindle bearing replacement. When I removed the seal on the spindle this is what I found (after some clean up of course):

Is this spindle salvageable or should I just replace it? I cant tell what caused that damage on the inside of the spindle where the seal was seated.

The spindle seal was the same as the inner wheel bearing seal, is that correct? The spindle bearing kit came with a V-groove seal. Is that what should be in there?

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Drum brake or disc brake spindle?
If drum brake there should be a seal installed there, not just the V-seal. The axle shaft would actually seal inside the seal pressed in the back of the spindle. that spindle is pretty much toast imho. If a disc brake or drum brake spindle there is a thrust washer between the outer axle shaft the back side of the spindle. The pic shows the back side of the spindle where the thrust washer would ride against pretty wasted and so should be replaced. it should be a nice smooth surface for the thrust washer to ride against when the front axle shaft is spinning.

sure looks wasted to me. I happen to have my spindle off and I have disc
brakes and I didn't see or had any type of thrust washer in the back of the
spindle. Could it be they may have been left out....tks for any answers that may
    help me also.....

The thrust washer actually fits into/onto the outer axle shaft and they usually stick onto the shaft during removal. There is a dust shield that creates a recess that the thrust washer fits into.

The odd thing is that most of the damage is where the spindle seal seats. Everything spun like butter when I took it apart and there were no signs of damage on the thrust washer or anywhere else. The best I could come up with is a past failure. But I cant even figure out what would fail to cause that. This Jeep was bought new by my father in-law so maybe I'll ask him if there was ever a catastrophic failure on that side.

    Thanks nickmil for the help.
