I purchased this flat fender yesterday from my wife's aunt. From my initial inspection I thought it was a 3A, but now I'm confused. It is registered as 1951, Vin is 3J62189, which matches the engine number, can't find a ID plate with actual serial number. Has L-head engine, T-90, D-18, 25 front, 41 rear axles. Converted to 12 volt, but has a generator. No tailgate, no glove box, tool box under passenger seat. Anyone's thoughts?

    What's the dash look like?

Looks 3A-ish, except for the tailgate. Maybe a repop tub? Or an M38?

Jeeps this age typically have a lot of history, so regardless I would be happy to have it. Looks like it's in good shape to me.

    2a, 3A, M38--doesn't matter to me -- it's a flattie that I would keep. Looks very nice..

My money would be on cj3a that someone removed the tailgate on. All civvy jeeps came with tailgates. The m38 was the only military jeep to have one.

It could also be a DJ body. Does it have five seperate guages or one big one?

Here is a pic of the dash. I looked very carefully at the tailgate area, If someone filled it in, they did a very good job, but it has about 3 layers of paint on it, so who knows, not that important. My major plan for this jeep is to just go fishing in it. I'll leave it as is, but it does have a carb problem, only runs well with the choke 1/2 way out. Engine has been rebuilt within 5000 miles, new clutch, everything else works, except some dash problems with ammeter and speedo.

I was thinking DJ body on a 2A or 3A frame. My Uncle has one of those, but his has the single large guage. Your dash looks like a normal 3A. There's no indents on either side, so I think we can rule out an M38.

Yo can rule out an m38 for many reasons, wrong grill, wrong dash, no glove box, ebrake in wrong sport, no tool notches on the passenger side, no cowl battery box, ect....

It looks to me like someone filled in the tailgate opening. Why? Who knows-people do weird stuff to Jeeps.

I'm with Jim - memory says the D41 was more in the 2A years than the 3A... But then it's been known to be wrong at times too.

    i'll shoot for 3a

no key coil holes in the dash.

check to see how long the rear wheel well housings are... if they're still original. 32" 3a 34" 2a

u can check to see if your front fenders (at the rear) bolt to the frame...

They changed from D41 to D44 early in the 3A years. My 3A had a D41 originally. Still have it in my pile-o-axles.
