Looks like some kind of gear splitter. My German is pretty poor, but it appears to have 16 forward and 4 reverse speeds, so my guess is it is another gearbox between the transmission and the transfer case.

    Isn't a splitter the same as a brownie over/under?

    Simply fascinating !
It's certainly a two speed gear splitter of some sort.
Its either an under or an overdrive.
Everything else including both adapter plates look to be the normal T98 components for a CJ-5.
In other words the splitter could easily be removed from the assembly.

Ship the splitter to me for free non returnable identification service :)

    i tried
    this is what i got

4-Speed gearbox T98 with agricultural addition Untersätzungsgetriebe and normal Verteilergetriebe. After my account should be 16 forward and 4 reverse gears. There is the appropriate drive shafts.
The parts were in a Willys CJ5 Bj.1960 spoiled the Swiss army and continued until develop properly!

    NOTE
these two words dont exist in any of the translators i have access to.
    Untersätzungsgetriebe
    Verteilergetriebe

I'm inclined to believe its an underdrive too.

The pre 1963 CJ-5,6 with optional T98 had the slowest crawl ratio of any factory jeep ever manufactured.
    Transmission low (6.39) X Transfer case reduction (2.46) X Final drive 5.375 = 84 to 1 Crawl ratio.
Post 1962 CJ5,6 with T98 would normally have a 4.27 final drive unless special ordered with 5.38's.

If this is lets say a 30% underdrive then the crawl ratio slows to 110 to 1.
A Jeep geared any slower than that will be nearly useless except maybe for trenching.

In my opinion the rear propeller is horribly short.

Can someone please save those pics before they are gone ?

    Whatever it i, it's ++RARE++:)

Untersätzungsgetriebe translates as "under (something) reduction gears"

Well then you have a very special jeep because you have at least 2 rare yet desireable options for that vintage.
The 4.27 was the standard final drive as of 11/62.

Have you read the info Derek archived concerning T98A ?

Every Dauntless V6 Jeep I've ever seen had either 4.88's or 3.73's

Edit-dug out my FSM, it lists 4.27 as standard & 5.38 as optional for 4cyl., 3.73 as standard & 4.88 as optional for V6.

Diverging off topic here, so I'll try and get us back on.

The Hurricane engine is standard for all CJ's from 1953 through 1971.
Beginning in 1965 the optional Dauntless powered CJ's became available.
Dauntless powered CJ's have service standards seperate from those of the Hurricane powered CJ's.

Dauntless powered CJ's were equipped with a 3.73 final drive ratio as standard.
A 4.88 final drive ratio was the only Dauntless CJ final drive option.
Some of the Dauntless CJ service standards are vintage sensative.
The standard Dauntless transmissions were the T86 AA (65 to 67) and the T14 (67 to 71).
The T18 transmission was optional for post 1967 Dauntless CJ's.

The T90 transmission was always the CJ standard from 1945 through 1971,
This standard changed from the T90A to the T90C version in 11/62 along with the associated 4.27 final drive.

The 1956 introduction of the T98A for the CJ's was an option for the Hurricane powered CJ5,6 through 1971.
An optional final drive ratio did not exist prior to 11/62 therefore the T98A CJ's before then all have the 5.38's.
Post 11/62 CJ's are standard with a final drive ratio of 4.27.
The post 11/62 option for Hurricane powered CJ's is the 5.38 final drive ratio.
This is where unclebill's CJ fits in. His 1963 CJ5 has at least two major options, T98A and 5.38.

If you look at the pics that WUZE has linked you will notice a twin stick transfer case behind the optional T98A.
If you look closely you will notice that the sticks have a different shape than do typical twin sticks.
Those are correct factory twin sticks for use with T98A.
They are identicle to the typical twin sticks of the era except they do not have a "rearward" bend to them.

In the 1965 model year all CJ's changed from the twin stick transfer case controls.
All post 1965 CJ's become standard with the single stick transfer case control.

In my opinion the T98 option with twin stick (56-64) and 5.38 final drive was the all time supreme "off road" factory available CJ.

I suspect that this "unique" underdriven drivetrain assembly was likely an agricultural experiment.
It was certainly never designated as "JEEP" Approved Special Equipment.
