Does anyone know what this marking may mean? It is underneath the identification plate. It is a '57 CJ5 with no special options other than the 60/40front seats, and a Ramsey Mx200R PTO winch. Were the winches factory installed or only a dealer installation.

It's an assembly line mark. I don't know of any record about what they mean.

    Collectors like to see them.

Kaiser NEVER termed them as 60/40 seats.
Kaiser only referred to these as 1/3 type and 2/3 type seats.

Note that the "60" was placed mainly under the serial number plate.
Seems that this factory marking was intended to be covered over by the serial number plate.
What is your serial plate number ?

It looks like the S/N plate was there at one time. The holes are there as is the outline.

I have the body stripped for paint, this number was under the plate. Also I don't know exactly what the seat option I have was called by Willys, I am just describing it as 60/40. The driver seat is a modified rear seat frame, which was factory installed, with a standard passenger seat, resulting in a full bench. Previous inquiries resulted in pictures from several other people describing this as original. My body does not have any extra holes where a standard drivers seat frame would fit, other than the adjustment holes in the door cutout.

    Its a factory line number.
There was an order for that jeep placed by a dealer. Paperwork was generated to fulfill the order and the paperwork showed how the jeep was to be delivered (engine, interior, paint, gearing etc).
As the chassis went down the line it was assigned a line number. The body was done separately and also got a line number that was to match it up with the correctly configured chassis.

The best documented line numbers are probably on the Chevy cars because the paperwork had the line number written in pencil on it as well as on the chassis and body. At the end of the line the paperwork was either tossed into the car (usually under a seat or carpet) or it had been glued to the fuel tank (thats why you might hear corvette guys say it has the tank sheet).

Seems kinda high to be an "inspected by" number.

I found this marking while stripping the paint. It was under the color but over the primer. It reads TRAN, which I am assuming is a production note indicating the color to be applied, as the paint code says transport yellow.

    Been curious about this...:?
    Here's mine.

    '59 CJ5

Located on the Passenger side of the firewall. .
    (#51)

Was there ever a consensus on this?
    Inspector # seems plausible.
    Definitely not 60/40 1/3-2/3 seating.
