i installed some vibration dampeners today on the slug.
my spare was bouncing ever so slightly on it's mount.
    and i didnt like it.
    so i fixed it.:coffee:
    i used 3/4" x1 1/2x 2 1/2 blocks of hardwood.
and so i wouldnt have to drill any more holes.
i used double sided gasket tape to attach them. (it is like a super tape.)
now my spare is rock solid.
and my vibes are nice and damp.

    this link will explain more.

    i lent my camera out
but i put one in the same place as the pics in the link
and put another horizontally at the extreme rear edge of the fender.
now it cant really move anywhere.
for folks like me that dig the classic look of the side mount tires.
this is a super easy thing to do.

If you have an original tub, there should be two screw holes from the original wood block.

I no longer have the dimensions but here is a pic of the block. I used oak.

The spare tire dampener from my '56 cj5 looks to be original and appears to be oak. The dimensions of which are:
    Length: - 4 5/8"
    Width: - 1 3/4"
    Thick: - 3/8"
The bolt holes are symmetrically placed, 3 1/2" on center, countersunk philips-head.

I bought a very nice replacement block from Walck’s. Holes are 100% correct to the body holes.

What is this carriage bolt and cage nut for on the RH rear side?

At some point, Jeep put a mushroom-headed bolt in that location as a tire bumper. The bolt is maybe 3/8" thread and the head is like 2" across. Possible there is a threaded hole under that carriage bolt.

There is indeed a cage nut behind it, I’m just wondering what to do during paint because it is frozen in place so I think I might cut it out and re-weld a nut back there so I can add a stainless bolt later
