can-O-worms right there;) for me the time that ive owned my jeep, budget and jeep dont go in the same sentance. i would start off with basic things (what the jeep needs to be safe and dependable) then work from there. it seems ever mod i do winds up being al least $300-$500 a whack :lurk:

    1. get Jeep drivable and drive in as many conditions as can safely be done.
    2. take note of the things that do not work well with the way you want to use the Jeep.
    3. read the forum
    4. search the forum for info on mods that will address the issues you have with the Jeep.
    5. ask for opinions as to what mods work best to address the issues you have with the Jeep
    6. do the upgrades that you can afford and need to make the Jeep do what you want.
    7. repeat from step 1 until you are happy with all things about the Jeep then go to step 8.

    Oh....
    8. sell the Jeep because it is no longer a challenge to work on itR)

Aren't all mods done on a budget? ;)

W/o knowing more about what you are starting with and what your intended use is it's really hard to say.

I think alot of members here started out ( like me ) with Jeeps that need ALOT of TLC to get into decent driving condition ( due mainly to the age of these vehicles ). So when they start thinking of working on a Jeep they start at the basics. ( brakes, steering, motor, trans, body, wiring...later come mods )

What condition is the Jeep you are wanting to "mod" ?

    PS: ya got pics ??

My Jeep was running when I bought it.

    upgrade brakes (drum size)
    headlight relay
    bigger alternator / internal regulator
    electronic ignition
new suspension - maybe not a low budget mod, but SO worthwhile and rewarding

Ive rebuilt everything except the engine on my 68. Its pretty much stock but with a shackle lift and extra leaf spring, lockers front and rear, saginaw steering conversion. I get a share of our income tax this year so need to plan wisely for my next project.
I,m thinking switching gear ratio from 3.73s to 5.38s and spring over or new intake, carb and cam, other choices? have to keep it around a grand. Ihave a hei dist. ready to stick in and was also thinking about an electric fan, better alternator and extra battery.

For me the best mods were:
    1 - Saginaw steering
2 - Disk brakes up front
    3 - Better headlights
    4 - Better ignition
    5 - Rewire

X2 on the brakes - either 11" all around or discs up front.

What do you have for a rollcage?

uh well thats another option, IT has something the last owner cut in half sleeved with pipe and welded , kind of, back together. I think he was in a learning curve. I was thinking of getting a used stock roll bar out of a newer model will they fit? it has 11" brakes I also have ideas of a new aftermarket heater and hanging the brakes and clutch from a newer jeep in place under the hood.

Using a stock bar and adding a front hoop can be done for not too much $$$.

If your engine is good running, I would pass on the intake/cam/carb - lots of money for really not that much performance (it's still a V6).

Disc brakes are a lot of bang for the buck. Power disc brakes even more so. Can be largely sourced in the junkyard (except maybe rotors and hardware).

Summit heater is a great low-buck project. Removing the the stock heater and switching to a vacuum booster with hanging pedals and big brakes could be done under $1k if you hit the junkyard, and the discs can be swapped over to D30 if you upgrade again in the future.

more like $500- $1000 I know what you mean, one thing leads to the next. I've managed to keep mine under $3000 grand so far counting the jeep
I bought for $1500. I dont plan on making one of those monsters you see on tv but want a good strong, reliable, vehicle, out here in Wyoming you can still find places that no one else may find for quite a while.
