After 2 months of waiting, DMV finally processed my registration. All I need to do is pay the fee, get plates and I should be able to drive this thing on the street (watch out motorists...homemade vehicle ahead). I'm hoping it doesn't take them another several months to issue the plates and sticker. California DMV has been slow due to the mandatory office closing on fridays.

Did a little garage cleanup. It has gotten to the point where there were too many things in the middle and I was stretching my legs over things to get to the other side. I had the hoist, backseat, containers of fluids, welding cart, and miscellaneous parts dumped in the middle. Now there's a nice space in the middle. Should be good for 4-6 months depending on the amount of activity.

    What I did this weekend

Still need to hook up the controls but I had the switch connected to battery power and spun the motor. It was a good time to spool the wire rope properly also.

    Other progress:
Got the tail lights, signals, hazard, brake lights to work. Just need to hook up back up lights.

Had the tailgate sandblasted and I need to repair the rot along the hinge (typical).

I'm planning on sanding and then rolling a few coats of paint on the hood, fenders and grill. Not satisfied with how the paint turned out on those parts. Those parts were sprayed by my neighbor with rustoleum and the paint isn't thick enough to my liking. I'm beginning to see hints of rust on areas were the paint was especially thin (corners and such). I've also been grinding metal next to the jeep and specks of metal dust that have settled on the paints surface are beginning to rust . Heartbreaking!

Several times I've test drove the jeep down the street and damn! Thing is noisy with the hardtop. I've been considering removing the Flowmaster and just putting a regular muffler in there. The granny gear is awesome though even with the t-case on 2 high.

    edit:
still got a bunch of loose ends to work on...

Looking good. I just caught up on your build and was impressed on how well it is coming together. Nice job on narrowing the front axle.
I was thinking of your fender flare issue and was wondering if you have considered TJ flares. They are quite wide and give good coverage. They can be trimmed to work quite well on the older jeeps. They also allow for larger wheel openings to keep the Jeep low with big tires. I have seen a cj6 with a bestop tiger top and TJ flares in a picture in the 4WD hardware catalog and those flares really suite the cj6 well. TJ flares are cheap in the wrecking yard. Just something to think about.

If you need more width, the Sahara TJ flares are about an inch wider than the stock TJ flares.

Thanks. I recently bought some replacement ones but haven't installed them yet. It looks like the tires will stick out about 5-6 inches past the flares. Functionally, they aren't that great. I've considered the TJ flares and call me crazy but the only thing holding me back from using them is the TJ look. I guess I'm a purist when it comes to fender flares :). Like you said, they function well and have great coverage. I'll check local junkyard prices and if they're cheap enough I'll try them on and see what they actually look like on the jeep. I can change minds.

Thanks. Jim, I'll pm you my number.

    I'll keep an eye out.

Here is a picture of a CJ6 with TJ rear flares. I think it really suites the Jeep. I like this look so much it makes me want to find a 6 to build similar to this one.

Never been a fan of the TJ flares on ECJs myself. Just removes one more thing that makes an old Jeep look old...;)

I need to do the same thing with my tailgate, it's rusted in the same exact place as yours.

Im not sure i just found one that the hinge bar thingey fit in and its about the same thickness steel as the sheetmetal so it worked well. I didnt take any during pics.

looks like a 3/4" tube with 1/2" i.d. will work.

the rot on mine crept up to the flat sheet metal (not just the rounded part) so I had to add about an inch or so of sheet metal. that's the reason for the wrap.

I've been taking the '6 for test drives but I keep getting an annoying hesitation. It accelerates fine if I slowwwly apply the gas pedal, otherwise...

    any ideas?

    What I've done so far:
-Checked vacuum lines and replaced a couple of lines. No vacuum leaks.
    -Set timing.
-Checked TPS and it tested good
-I installed a fuel pressure gauge and I'm getting 10 psi. I might not be getting an accurate reading since I installed the gauge before the fuel filter. The line after the fuel filter is hard line and didn't want to cut and splice into that. I don't know how much pressure drop the filter will produce but if it's more than 1 psi then the fuel pressue will be out of spec.
-I tried to get engine codes but none showed. I've previously had the battery cables disconnected so that probably cleared whatever codes were stored.

The hesitation happens when the engine is on idle also. If I press the gas pedal quickly, the engine will bog momentarily and then finally rev. I also replaced the throttle cable thinking it could be the loose linkages...plus the one that was on there was too long (looped twice)...

Going to spend today checking things. If I get frustrated with that, I'll move to bodywork...

Having doubts whether I have the correct fuel pump. I supposedly ordered a carter p5001 from napa...what I have doesn't look like any of those in the pictures I've come across. The numbers on what I have doesn't show up on any searches...
