I asked this question a while back but I need to know what kind of oil pressure you guys are getting. After the Jeeps warmed up I'm getting 17-20lbs. And cold I'm starting at 40-50. Is this too big a difference or does that matter?
    Thanks, Marc

Marc: I think the main thing is to have oil pressure (make sure the lifters aren't rattling). 17-20 lbs. seems a little on the low side....have you check with another gauge? Electrical gauges can give incorrect readings. Mine at idle is around 10-15 going down the road 50-60. Good Luck!! Glenn

I've always been told that a good rule of thumb is for every 1000 RPM, look for 10 PSI oil pressure... not sure how accurate that is though.

Marc that's almost exactly what my readings are, and my V6 is freshly rebuilt w/ hi-volume pump. No probs here.

One thing tho, be sure to keep noticing the low value over time. If it gradually gets lower and lower after oil level's been verified, consider pulling the pan and inspecting the pickup screen for increasing clogg-ness.

Alan, is that all the oil pressure you have after a rebuild, my motor would still idle at 30 psi even after 160k miles on it and would hold 50 psi driving down the road with the factory oil pump setup.
I am currently rebuilding mine with the hi volume pump kit and enlarged pickup holes in the block
(7/16" to 1/2") that doesn't sound like alot, but that is roughly a 15% increase in volume.

My Jeepster's oil pressure - as far as I know it has 245,000 miles (it runs like it too  ) 40-50 psi @ cold idle, 20-30 @ warm idle, 40-45 warm @ speed. If I let it get a quart low the lifters start knocking and the oil pressure drops about 10 psi.

I don't know what's normal for the V6, but the 10psi/1000RPM is probably marginal at idle speeds of 600-800 RPM. I'd say if you have 15psi at hot idle and 40-50psi hot max, that's ok. Certainly AMC V8 owners with high mileage engines would be delighted with those readings.

Also, you need to be nice to a high mileage engine and pay particularly close attention to revs and oil pressure and level.

My V6 has about 25-30 psi at hot idle and about 45psi going down the highway. That's with a 139,000 mile engine with a hi-volume pump.

Thanks again. I guess my numbers are good. I'm also running Mobil 1. Do you think that the viscosity of synthetics plays any part? If I put in regular oil I wonder if that would affect my pressure?

Mike, the numbers I got were absolute low end during the hottest part of the summer after a 40-minute drive. (~ 20lbs. at idle.) Running it'd be up to 40-45 laybs in the same conditions. Oh yeah, that's after 5000 miles after rebuild. No I have not verified proper fluid top-off-ness for those 20 lbs. (better check tomorrow!! :p )

Synthetics will show a little less pressure on the gauge due to there flow ability.

    I run 60 psi hot @ 3,000 rpm. But I have the 4.3 Chevy so that doesn't count R) R) :D

My :v6: runs 8-15 at a hot idle (110* outside temp) at 650 rpm. At 2300 rpm its about 35 lbs. Well with factory specs for a stocker I believe. I run Castrol 5-50 Syntec.
