steering bellcrank rebuild

Ok, a little help here. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the bellcrank on a 71 v6, have the new bearings and seals in. The new pin fits snug into the bell crank, but is too big to go into the bellcrank support. Do I have the wrong kit? The old one had a smaller pin with a sleeve on it that went over the pin and fit inside the old bearings. what gives? can I drill out the bellcrank support for the larger pin or am i missing something?

btw, this is my first post on the board, i've been reading it for sometime, i'll get some pics of da rig up when i deem it photo worthy.

 

Sounds like you need an earlier bellcrank kit, which was 7/8" instead of 1 1/8". Part number 920556 for 7/8" and 991381 for 1 1/8". Good Luck! Glenn

Wow, my title says 71, but after trying to rebuild the steering bellcrank, and considering the fact that my wipers come from the top of the windshield frame, it occured to me that it probably isn't a 71, I looked up the vin, its a 66.

66 "should" have the 7/8" at least mine did.

 

yeah, it does, if I had taken the thing apart before i bought the service kit i'd have known that, oh well, maybe mile high will trade me studs. Thx for the replies guys, any other notable differences between 66 and 71 model years?

 

Lynn, you forgot the different tail lights, and because of the rear tank, no supports for the pintel hook on the rear drawbar, and they had a twin reservoir master cylinder.

 

one other, although not mechanical but important difference

71= AMC

66= Kaiser

 

another difference.....if V/6 ....(66- T-86)....(71- T-14)...also 4/way flashers, radiator/grille, clutch linkage, and I'm sure more as time goes on. Good Luck!! Glenn

 

Thx for the info, the bellcrank's fixed, down from 8 to 2 inches of play! Just had the rear end rebuilt, $2300, ouch, ah well, time to hit the trails.

 

It should have included alot of something whatever it was!!

Well, it included a new powerlok, and a new housing to throw it all into, since the old one got torn up pretty bad. btw, should it be noisy until it breaks in? it doesn't sound bad, kinda like when you put your ear right up to one with the cover off, but louder.

 

there should be no noise
how are you getting your ear to the cover while driving
when I have the cover off of mine, it is very quiet
for it is not turning at all
seriously, you should have no noises coming from the rear axle
...unless.....
the powerlock is chattering upon cornering, usually when warmed up; special additive to cure this problem though
or
other mechanical possibilites
loose ubolts, spring bolts, lug nuts
since the whole housing was replaced, lots to look at

 

nevermind noise, i drove it to glenwood springs from denver today, now it's binding up, as in i can't even push the thing in neutral. also, they didn't bleed my brakes apparently, cuz i gotta pump the pedal twice before they'll grab at all. Now I'm 180 miles away from the shop that did the work, and i have an undriveable jeep.
