looking for ideas on the best way to rewire my old 8274 winch. I believe it would be good to use a relay, like a ford starter relay. I've seen it in magazines but haven't been able to come up with a diagram. Just searched this site but must not be using the right words. Anyone have a link or know where to look.

Just a word to the wise.....Don't use regular solenoids....make sure they have silver contacts. The silver contacts wear better for winch useage. Good Luck!! Glenn

Just to add to Jeepngem...... I am in the process of adding a solenoid & switch to my Warn, I went to the local parts god looking for Ford stuff and was redirected to something labeled a continuous use solenoid. Its pretty, and as you would expect, twice the price..... but when you need the winch, it will look like a hell of an investment.....

Sorry not to get back sooner....... the solenoid I purchased is from Carquest # SS597.....

My winch is a Warn 8000. The controls for this winch are mounted on the Dash (old school) it does not have solenoid controls and uses all manual levers/knobs. I intend to the use the solenoid as a positive on/off switch, to keep little kids (like me) from playing with the controls and and feeding cable in n out while at the hamburger stand..... happy winching....

Got mine hooked up yesterday. I'd like to throw a few photo's in the pot and will when I figure out how. Anyway, nothin special but neat and clean. A power switch in the dash with Ford 'niod under hood and spare in the tool box. I'll use the Warn plugin control. Really don't plan on using it much. Thanks for the responses. And Merner71, the Pirate site about the Warn rebuild is a keeper. To bad the guys on it have to be such PUNKS all the time. I guess I'm an old fart, well not that old 52 but I just don't uderstand their Bull*hit.

Thanks ci, I just reread my post and I was afraid it wasn't too clear on who I was asking for part numbers. I added a togle switch to the dash so I could run it and the Jeep at the same time. It goes through a 4-wire flat trailer connector at the grill which I usually disconnect when not on the trail, but I had it hooked up last time I needed an inspection and the inspector was messing with it while he was honking the horn and flashing the lights. No damage done but I thought I might need other safety measure, guess two won't work any better than one if I don;t use them.
