a while ago i had someone tell me that the '71 should have renegade badges on it b/c not many v6's were made that weren't renegades. i thought nothing of it and went on because i knew it had the side mounted spare, thus it wasn't a renegade. for some reason i was thinking about this the other day and then looked at a section of the body tub that has stumped me for a while. on the rear corners of the body tub i have three sets of four rivets. two of them are on the passenger side (one on the upper, one on the lower) and the last set is on the upper drivers side.

does this sound like something that is standard eqipment for a 71 or does it sound like it left the factory with the holes drilled for the rear mounted spare?

In '71, a Renegade with a rear mounted spare from the factory would have a solid back panel that eliminates the tailgate. The solid back panel became optional for all CJs in '73 IIRC.

The 1970 Renegade I type of spare tire carrier was available as a dealer accessory. You can see the brackets here http://www.earlycj5.com/Tech/Renegade/images/rITailgate.jpeg which may match your rivet holes.

Nope, the '70 Renegade spare tire carrier made by Whitco was installed by the factory along with the other Renegade options.

Just as the pic shows: The Renegade had a solid back panel (no tailgate) and a swing away, tubular tire rack. Glenn

Risking beating a dead horse, look at the orange R-II on the ECJ5 page above. Clearly, no swing away tire carrier. This is the same solid back panel as used on the V8 Renegades and available as an option most if not all years of the intermediates. There's no point to having a Whitco tire carrier and a solid back panel (thanks for reminding me of the manufacturer, beeser). The Whitco carrier was available as a dealer installed accessory for all CJs through at least 1975, as well as coming with the R-I package.

well, judgung by the pic on the early cj site (go figure) it isn't for a tire carrier. those look like they're on the flat side and mine are half way through the bend on the rear corners. i'm mainly talking about the latch plate... the set of hole's i've got are no where near the location for that bracket in the picture. so the mystery continues, what on earth was there??

Sounds like the aftermarket tire carrier made by Kayline. There were plenty of them sold.
