Rear Disc Brakes

    So what say yee. I am considering adding rear discs to my 71'. I did the front swap a couple of years back. Quick reminder.
    Stock under floor M/C. Front disc brake swap, rear 10" drums.
    Looking for folks that have done this with the stock M/C. Pros and cons.

    Does have power steering. Tons of room under the rear floor in front the gas tank.

    I figure I could go that route or add hanging pedals and power brakes. Can I use my AA clutch adapter with hanging pedals?

    I have a ff in the rear but went 4 wheel discs with the under floor master cylinder. No problems here. I am eventually going swinging pedals and firewall dual reservoir master, but that's down the road. Been that way for around 13-14 years now.

    I have 4 wheel discs in my 2A with a CJ5 drivetrain (V-6,T-14) Have the dual MC from the 5 also. No problems. I have a hydroboost out of an Astro I scrapped that I planned on putting in but have found I haven't needed it.

    The front discs do most of the work, but there is a major coolness factor with 4 wheel discs. Be sure you are using organic pads all the way around if you don't use a booster. I'm not using a booster and really don't see the need for one on a CJ, unless you have an auto maybe.

    I knew you were running 4 wheel discs but I was not sure if you had power or not. Did you buy a kit?

    I already had the Warn FF so it was basically the same as doing the front conversion without the grinding. I'm thinking the easiest way to do discs on the rear without the floater would be to use weld on caliper brackets. They can be had through Summit Racing, Wilwood and a lot of Hot Rod sites. It's posible that the GM brackets may fit on the rear too, but I don't know what kind of other problems that might create. I assume you have the flanged axle?

    I do have a flanged axle. I do not really have access to a welder. There is a bolt on kit out there for $290 that does not include the calipers. I would imagine I could source most of the parts at a boneyard but the prices around here are not much better. When I did the front swap the 2 brackets and 2 calipers were around $120. I had to rebuild the calipers too. I think I can get a good deal on calipers from a friend.

    If that kit includes the rotors and all you need to buy is the calipers, that's not too bad of a deal. You might want to call TSM Manufacturing and confirm their kit will work with the flanged axle. I notice that their ad says '48 to Mid '70 at the top. Then it says '48 to '71 lower down on the page.

    I called today. They have 2 different kits, one with evenly spaced bolt holes and one with odd spaced. I talked to him this afternoon and he set me straight and told me the kit will work on my 71'. They are using front Chevy Calipers so that should be easy to source.
    Did you take the res valve out of the M/C and add a 2#?

    The Chevy caliper mounts work on the rear also. That is what I used.
