I have no radio cutout in my dash!!!!

My 75 has no cutout for a stereo . Just wondering if there is a cheaper easier way to install one , other than cutting a hole?

You could build some sort of under mount bracket like CB's use.

 

ammo can between the seats, mount it under dash like a cb, find a vintage am/fm stereo unit that was SUPPOSED to be mounted under the dash, they're out there...

there are plenty of options. the end all is to just cut our dash or buy a replacement with the cutout...... remember you'll also need to think about speakers. the dash with a radio cutout would also have speaker grills in it.

 

I just removed a probably dealer installed underdash shaft radio 'pod' from a 74. I will tell you it's hard to reach to the right of the heater controls, and the knob interfered with the pass seat flipping forward.

Also clearance for a more modern unit (even after cutting the part to DIN) was close when it came to the heater box/controls.

I think this pod with the RIGHT radio (as stated above) can work without interfering with the pass seat flip.

I'm going overhead console from my front cage to mid cage or some sort of 8-9" console next to the driver seat most probably.

 

I have put radios under the dash (theft hazard) and in the dash (can be done but not ideal).

A better option may be to put the radio in a center console. This is a popular project - I think you can find some ideas by searching the old posts.

Today, for a Jeep, I'd avoid any type of removable media; instead going with satellite radio or Ipod-driven. You may be able to put an Ipod amp under the dash with no penetration other than a jack for the Ipod. Even that could be mounted on a bracket under the dash. Then add a bracket to support the Ipod... I presume they exist.

 

When I was a teenager I mounted mine in the tool box with the front of the stereo facing the drivers seat. Worked really well, although you have to mindful of water crossings, but in 12 years, never had in issue. Plus from inside the box, which I secured, I was able to put a pretty stout mount that bolted through the floorboards. Never had it stolen, plus a walk by opportunist thief would have missed this location. I have since removed all traces of a stereo and filled the speaker holes, but if I desired tunes, I would install it there again.

 

I guess I am the old ball. I mounted a amp under the passengers seat. Took a goose neck from a lamp, made a plate on top and mounted it the tool box. then pluged in a portable XM radio to the line in on the amp. Got some outdoor home speakers (I know 8 ohm) mounted them on the fenders. and jammed.

 

I mounted mine in the glove box. Very little room for storage there anyway. It won't totally stop the thiefs but "out of sight , out of mind".:v6:

What material did you use to make the wall in the glove box to install the unit in?

 

16 ga. steel. Since I don't have a bender, I cut the individual pieces and welded it up. With a bender just the corners would need welding. Its mounted using the glove box holes.:v6:
