I was thinking about that the other day. How many CJ-5s were made and #1 survived.

    Very, very, very cool

This is cool, but would it really be #1? or model 57648 10001, instead of model 57548 10001?
Where is the cj5 with willys in the cowl they used in the very first publicity photos and in the accessory catalog? That is a mystery I'd love to see solved.

There was a post here years ago from a guy who claimed to have found a CJ5 in, IIRC, California that had "Willys"on the side of it instead of "JEEP"- after 2-3 posts he disappeared:rofl:

Id say that Willys is long gone or in a barn. the fact that cj5 #1 is still around is a miracle, i think the actual first one is probably lost...

or that guy actually did find it and is in hiding with alot of cash.....

Humm, I thought the SNs ran in sequence and the prefix did not matter. This could still be CJ-5 #1. The purported CJ-5 with "Willys" on the cowl would have been a pre-production model so it wouldn't have had a SN I'd guess.

The cj6's (57748 ) and diesel cj5/6 (57558/57758 ) all started at 10001 (according to Jim Allen's book). He doesn't list any SN.'s for the stripped chassis. But I've never seen a stripped chassis, I've always wondered what reason the factory would have produced them. Interesting this one has a governor, that would be good for dealer demo's.

Wait, so you're saying that each prefix had it's own SN series?

That would seem odd to me since I would think the frames would all be built and stamped with the SN before the tub was put on or not put on which determined the type of prefix that went with it.

I think they had to do this to keep the series numbers separate or accurate due to their sequential numbering system, because the only difference in models was the prefix, unlike after 1963 when you could tell the model and other info by the codes in the SN.

The cj3a and b had years in the 50's where they reverted to 10001 each year, with only a single digit change in the prefix ( example: 452-gb1 and 453-gb1 for the cj3a model years 52 and 53 respectively ).

Ahh, I need to pay better attention in class.

So this would be Stripped Chasis Number one, which could be Cj-5 number one but we really can't tell since production numbers don't give day/month info. Just SN ranges for the years.

I see what you're saying.

Yeah, none of the links work any more. I found this thread awhile back and now there's nothing. Uncle VIN, I or someone else here would be glad to help you Photobucket if you want to post them there. Its really easy.
